Trafalgar Yards/Manors late 60s

Post by Atlantic 4433 »

Hello all. New to the forum and planning a circa 1968/9 layout in N Gauge of the Manors-Byker bridge area of ECML, I asked this question two weeks ago in the 'discussion' area. Having had precisely zero replies, I thought I'd try again here!
Here goes...Trafalgar south goods and the sidings that ran to the former Granary on the south side of Manors (East) station- were they still used for anything as late as 1968/9? If so, and 5years after the electrics went, what traffic and with what traction?
Any steer on this gratefully received.

Have you seen this site? https://newcastlequayside.wordpress.com/prototype/
On the same site, this page contains some scans from Railway World and Railway Bylines articles in 1967 and 1970: https://newcastlequayside.wordpress.com ... -research/
Both articles can be blown up and read on the website, and the last paragraph of the RW one says that after the ES1s were withdrawn diesel mechanical shunters worked the [de-electrified?] branch: https://newcastlequayside.files.wordpre ... 863102.jpg
The first page of the RW article shows an 03, D2163, on what if I understand correctly (I don't know the area that well) is a train to the Quayside Branch.
Elsewhere on the site there are pictures of an 04 coupled up to an ES1, and 08s floating about too.

I hope this helps, but I'm not quite sure of how all the sites in this area fit together.

Hi Daddyman,
Many, many thanks for getting in touch. As you suspected, I'd not checked in for replies for a few weeks as the trail had gone cold!
No, I'd not managed to find that Quayside branch blog before - as you might imagine, am very happy with the photographs therein. The ones of Trafalgar Yard north/east of Argyle St bridge and near New Bridge St over bridge are fantastic, even showing the dockside and buildings on the south side beautifully. Great stuff and thank you again.
Richard.
