Mashima to Close - Motor Substitute

Post by cctransuk »

It is reported elsewhere that Mashima is to close - yes, really, this time!

Some members may be aware that I have for some time been supplying, at a bargain price, a quality Japanese-made Mitsumi motor that is ideal for 4mm. scale use.

With the apparent end of Mashima production imminent, I have restocked my Mitsumi motors in anticipation of increased demand for substitute motors.

The spec. sheet for the motor can be found at www.mitsumi.co.jp/Catalog/pdf/motorav_m15n_3_e.pdf , and full ordering details at http://www.cctrans.org.uk/ .

I and many other modellers have used these motors very successfully - they have excellent performance characteristics. In fact, customers have commented that they are smoother and quieter running than Mashima motors.

Regards,
John Isherwood.

John,

I appreciate that you are catering for the 4mm market but several of us also model in 7mm and the likes of 'Big Jim' McGeown's' Connoisseur kits are amongst those with specific motor mount etches for a Mashima (which Jim stocks and will supply).

I guess a 'heads up' to the GOG guys is called for...

I think I will still use the £1.99 for five motors available on ebay.

Mitsumi also do a larger motor, perhaps more suited to 7mm. scale.

However, I cannot find any for sale in modest quantities; it'd be a case of ordering a bulk batch from the makers.

My purchases of motors to date include:

Approximate size 12mm x 16mm by 26.4mm long rated at 9,000 rpm shaft only an one end. Three pole and look like a big brother of the £1.99 for 5 type.

Approximate size 9.5mm x 14mm by 25.4mm long 5 pole skew wound double ended shaft ( look very much like the Hornby motor in the J15) rated at 13,500 rpm at 12 volts. Can't remember the cost but I think that 12 come to about £12.00.

Approximate size 12.5mm x 16mm by 28mm long 5 pole skew wound double ended shaft again rated at 13,500 rpm at 12 volts. I think these were £2.00 each

These last two have very powerful magnetic fields that could interfere with suspension system so I'm looking for Mu metal. They are very smooth with no magnetic lock.

All found on our favourite shopping site.

I have just received another batch of motors, this time I'm sure they are the "Original" Hornby type used in the A1/3/4. Providing the gearing is compatible they would be ideal for re-placing the cheapo motor in the P2.

Whilst I've been lucky enough to have no complaint about the standard motors in my three P2s so far, that sounds very interesting. Are you inclined to say any more about the source, part No and price of these motors - or have you bought in bulk to sell on?

No interest in becoming involved with selling on, as with other motors they are freely available on ebay I think I paid £2.00 each. Try ebay "DC12-24v Five Pole Rotor Compensates carbon Brush High Speed Micro Motor Toy DIY" they are about 20mm by 17mm and about 35mm long. There are also several other types that may be of interest. The only let down for scratch building is the lack of suitable fixing points.

These, two of which I received last week, appear on close comparison to be an exact match to the motors in the "best" versions of the Hornby Gresley Pacifics.
