A4s v other Gresley Designs

Possibly this ought to go into the Grantham thread, but I do like the picture you've posted there, John. ... All this and not an A4 in sight.

Possibly this ought to go into the Grantham thread,
Agreed Jonathan, but it seems to have taken root.

I can live without A4s, heresy here no doubt.

John

A4s are also far from being my favourite locos. I have an A4 or two, and the related W1, plus the fantasy 4-8-2 streamliner simply because they are relevant to the overall LNER picture. Whilst the Bugatti nose apparently worked well as a smoke lifter, it certainly isn't the shape that I would choose for a truly streamlined look. The A4 appearance is at its most nearly tolerable, to my eye, when the original valances are present in full. The combination of the flat fronted nose in conflict with the otherwise three-dimensional streamlining just looks utterly hideous to me when the valances are removed too - it always has looked hideous to me too, from my earliest childhood browsing of an Ian Allen combined volume.....
Bachmann A2 to A2/3: from my thread in Model Railways page 56 to 83, also

Hornby A3 to A1/1 Great Northern: from page 84, in resin from page 108.

Apologies for so many missing images - see page 1 for reasons & possible solution.

Oh dear! Busted....

Mick,

As far as I remember, from over two and a half years ago, I marked out a circular hole for the water filler access, either with a standard pair of compasses, or a proper circular cutter used lightly, or maybe even something round of the right size as a template, then cut out material erring on the waste-side (inside) of the line, then trimmed to final size with a medium size half-round file - all done before fitting the sheet to the tender, but cutting only after imparting some curvature to the sheet. I'm always wary of trying to curve sheets that already have holes or gaps in them, such as GN cab cut-outs, as the sheet near the edges of the cut-out tends to stay flat instead of following the curve!
I had an interesting discussion recently on the question of whether the filler access hole should actually be circular, but not centred over the filler, as I've modelled it, which I think is as per the Isinglass drawing, or whether it should instead be "triangular with very rounded corners". I don't know the correct answer and I haven't had time to look for more evidence.
Thanks . I haven't looked yet hopefully the topping was discarded as on the A4's at some point !!.

Don't like A4's !!!

Re the A4 discussion: I find the shape of the A4 fascinating but if presented with an A3 or A4 and asked to pick one, I know what my choice would be!

Edit: I've just seen that my list of people to sit and 'annoy' at Warley has grown by two people!

Hello All, I thought it would be useful to move this debate away from Graeme's pages.

I would like to be positive in terms of Gresley loco aesthetics. I certainly admire the original A1s. I also find the V1 tanks and V2s excellent looking LNER period designs under Gresley.

I do like 'big' tanks engines.

G'Day Gents

I like the V2, it has a good balance, but I would say now, the O1 & O2, would be at the top of the list, But Mr Ivatt's designs are top of my favorite loco's.

Good thoughts Manna. I agree about the 2-8-0s, original cab or LNER? I have a preference for the former, although very glad I didn't have to work in one!

I realise this is not a 'Model Railways' topic either.

G'day Gents

Me neither, Opps.

No, got to be the GN cab, I like the fact that you have this very long boiler with a tiny cab stuck on the end of it.

I'll confess to having a liking for the GNR cab as well and to help make this topic model railway related offer a couple of pictures of my N gauge efforts on this front.
K3 4004.jpg
K3/1 (or rather a reasonable representation of one) number 4004 in mid to late 1930's condition with cut outs on the buffer beams. I butchered my original CAD for a K3/3 based on information shared by Graeme King for which I am most grateful. The tender is a mongrel made up from a heavily modified Farish V2 tender chassis and frames and a slightly modified Farish J39 stepped tender top (both modified so that they would fit together). It is riding on a Farish Southern N class chassis which, while far from accurate for the K3, looks the part to my eyes - to quote Tony Wright, very much a layout locomotive.

One of three J6s I've been working on an off on for a year now. This one is being built for a friend and represents one of the later series of the class in BR condition. It is mounted on a J39 chassis which means I've had to make more compromises to the body than I would usually like but, again, overall it looks the part. Issues with creating a CAD for the tender that I am happy enough with has stalled the progress of what I hoped would be an easy build!

There is a V1 currently in the works as well but it is currently very glossy and rather difficult to photograph as a result!
