Morning all

Yesterday saw me sat at the workbench railway modelling, for the first time since Dad passed away.

The Brake Van is Bachmann’s LNER variant which has incorrect BR handrails (or perhaps that should be had). New hand rails aren’t fixed as they will need painting away from the model.

Lots of lovely handrails on brake vans. Those that form T joints are particularly interesting to make and fit. A friend of mine has strictly limited the number of brake vans he is prepared to make because of the length of time it takes to fit them out with handrails! It's shame it isn't a Toad B or one of the pre-group type with handrails across the ends too....

Ha I think I’ll be only doing the one like this.

Decided I’ll mock up the first horizontal hand rail where it join the vertical hand rail. Make a little mark where it joins then solder away from the model (with a tiny bit of solder mind)

And hope when refitted it was in the right place! :shock:

Just realised Graeme that the T section is the bit I was referring to.

Does my soldering method sound wise? Can think of another way to do it, especially as I need to spray the hand rails with primer off the model.

I solder them while in place using folded card to space them off the model and protect it. You can use the same trick to mask behind them and spray them in situ, although I'd brush paint them if it were me.

Great idea that regarding the cardboard.

Will brush paint the handrails as you suggest, had considered priming off the model, but figured that may be more trouble than its worth.

I agree with the card spacer idea - I've done likewise.

Another decision to make is whether to try to solder the end of one rail to the side of the other, to make the true prototypical shape of joint, which may or may not be strong and neat when soldered, OR is it better to compromise on appearance slightly, say by filing the end of one rail to half-thickness and tucking it behind the other rail to create an overlapping soldered joint with a bit more strength. I've tried both methods and I don't know which I prefer.

Tom,

Great to see you back and planning to model part of the old North Eastern, abeit in its later British Railways days.

As you know I've now built (or in the case of the J72 both built and converted) a few ex North Eastern locos (4 x A6, B15, B16/1, 2 x D20, 3 x G5, J24, J25, J71, 4 x J72, J73, 3 x J77, Q5/1, Q5/2, Q7, Tenant, T1 etc.) though there are still quite a few to do. So, now, many of these kits will suit your new layout!!

Anyway, I hope the model of Askrigg turns out as well as Leaman Road did and as your depiction of a Welsh branch line has.

Thanks Mike and most kind of you!

Well passenger services circa 1953 were in the hands of the G5s, D20s and J21s. Goods traffic was mostly K1 hauled (plus Northallerton's J25s). Standard 2s were introduced in 1956 to Northallerton, and one is seen on snow plough duties in 1963 at.....Askrigg of all places.

I've now done the other side of the LNER Toad D.... handrail painting next....which should be fun!

Interesting train, September 1953 at Garsdale, coming onto the Wensleydale Branch, Ayr-Leyburn Horse Special. Already chatted to jwealleans about this train off forum. Although not accurate, by using two Hornby Teak Brake Comps, and a mixture of Horse boxes....a Horse Special can be represented. :)
