Printer for waterslide transfers

Post by Belvoir »

I have been using an OKI 3300 LED printer for several ( about fifteen ) years, and it has died.
Rather a shame as it still has half-full toner packs.

OKI were amused that it was still in use after so many years, but were unable to help.

I was about to re-start producing some 4mm scale artwork - so -

Any suggestions for a replacement ?
Is there anything that will print white ?
Any pertinent comment ?

Grateful thanks in advance

Don't think anyone has come up with a new printer that does white, since the oki did not sell that many I understand,
and is of course no longer available.

I believe you can still buy white waterslide paper, thus one needs to consider a different way of creating the lettering etc.

ALPS still have printers available that will print with white and metallic inks. See - http://www.alps-printer.com/printers-c-3.html

tomburnham - very many thanks

It has stirred up a memory of ALPS printers from er - well - a decade or so ago . . .

I think that even at that time they were no longer in production.

A second-hand one is a little expensive, and the "new" one at $3 999 would be a touch too extravagant, especially when freight and import duty are added.

Yes, I thought Alps were no longer around, or they only sold to commercial printers (ie. the $1000s price tag).

I believe there are things called "ghost toner" cartridges for some laser printers, useable in lieu of the black, allowing black areas in the image file to be printed white. I'm not sure how dense the white print actually appears, nor do I know if it is possible to pass the paper through twice to achieve increased density of white.

Have a look on another well known forum for the workbench of "Worsdell Forever" who fairly recently did some home printed white insignia for wagons. He may or may not be willing to reveal exactly how he did it, although I suspect it was with those ghost toner cartridges.....

Belvoir,
For those with deep pockets, Roland do printers capable of printing white, including this affordable solution at only £11,999! - https://www.rolanddg.co.uk/products/pri ... ed-printer
There may be printers near you that use these machines who may be able to print some transfers from your artwork.

tomburnham -

Fair point re. commercial printers - an acquaintance had some Gauge 1 artwork done as vinyl overlays, but they were a bit too heavy for 4mm.

regarding £12k for a Roland printer - I have never paid that much for a CAR.

atlantic 3279 -

I looked at Worsdell forever's pages, but he seems a little coy about details.
However, thank you for the link.

Do I really have to buy an Epson thingy ?

A quick Google gave me this:

https://www.ghost-white-toner.com/ghost ... r/?lang=en

It's laser printers only and you need your artwork in black......which will be printed in white.

Alternatively I was quoted c £130 for the artwork for a large sheet of assorted white script and numbers from photos I supplied.

I guess it comes down to how many items you need.

Precision Decals print white decals for a reasonable cost.
