Tube/Pipe wagons
G'day Gents
being my usual 'Dummy' self when it comes to wagons I thought I'd bought a LNER 12 tons pipe/tube wagon, but I'd bought a BR 22 ton Tube wagon, I had a look on the net to see if there was a LNER equivalent, I found a 20 tons tube wagon, which looks close, but I had already glued the sides on, the BR version has one small door in the middle, the LNER version has two large doors which take up the whole side, I'm going to make up the 22 ton tube as a BR unit, but may buy another one to make the LNER version, or should I just throw myself off the nearest cliff.

Is this the Parkside kit, Terry? It's not a conversion I'd given much thought to. Wasn't the BR version based more on the LMS design?

Yep, Parkside, the BR one is based on the LMS wagon, but the LNER 20 tonner (chassis wise) looks fairly close, it would need a new body. But that's not impossible to fix. On second thought's, maybe I should make it into a LMS tube wagon.
I'll hang off the cliff diving for the moment.

Re: Tube/Pipe wagons
Ay up!
Remember that most wagons were common user, even before 1923 so you would have about equal number of LMS, GWR and LNER wagons with a smattering of Southern. For some reason, the SR was better at keeping its wagons on the home system.....

Re: Tube/Pipe wagons
I am glad I am not the only one to make such a mistake - a few years ago I bought what I thought was an LMS pipe wagon only to find that it was a BR build to an LMS design which never saw the light of day until BR days.... I didn't throw myself of a cliff though, I just built it and sold it on.

Re: Tube/Pipe wagons
I don't have my notes with me but I seem to remember the proportion was found to be about 43% LMS, 39% LNER, 14% GWR and 4% SR.Blink Bonny wrote: ↑Thu Feb 28, 2019 6:26 pm Remember that most wagons were common user, even before 1923 so you would have about equal number of LMS, GWR and LNER wagons with a smattering of Southern. Most of the traffic for/from the SR area went to/from the Surrey Docks, Royal Docks and Southampton hence their wagons comparitive rarity in other parts of the country.
The LNER tube wagon mentioned isn’t that a 1940s production?

The one I'm trying to find out about is a Dia 098, built 1935, with two long doors, the other is Dia 199, built 1947, with 'NO' doors.
Thanks. manna

Re: Tube/Pipe wagons
The Diagram 98s built in the mid 1930s were numbered 181314 to 181388. 2 doors and a removable stanchion in between.
Another batch was built in 1947 by contractors Cambrian Nos. 301562 to 301601.
The Diagram 199 series, no doors, was 301602 to 301701.

Hi Manna,
Diagram 98 as follows:
19ft. wheelbase. 30ft. 4 3/4 in. over the headstocks, with 1ft. 8 1/2 in. buffers.
Diagram 199:
17ft. 6in. wheelbase and 27ft. over the headstocks.
I hope this helps.

Perfect, Dia. 98 is almost a perfect match for the Parkside kit, just needs a new body. All smiles now, don't need the cliff.
