No.1 – BTK – 4 Compartment Brake -
No.2 – TK – Dia 155 –
No.3 – RC – 32565 –
No.4 – CK – { I am struggling for a diagram for this, the closest I have found is the GNR CK at the Severn Valley}
No.5 – TK – Dia 155 –
No.6 – BTK 3 Compartment Brake –
From what has been mentioned so far I suspect this is probably a 1935 formation.

Carriage No.4 - If it is a class 158 is a Dia.7 CKL and would be either 158 or 183 as it appears from my notes to be from the Aberdeen portion of the Junior Scotsman. So it should be a Gresley 61' 8' cor compo (2½f 5 th) 9' 0" wide (1st cl comp @ N end)
No.5 TK class 1550 is a Dia.155 Gresley 61' 6" cor 3rd end vestibule - these were built in 1935/6 and numbered 1545 to 1578 which is why I suggest it's a 1935 formation.
No.6 BTK class 114 is a Dia.40 Gresley 61' 6" cor bk. 3rd-3 compts 9' 0" wide (Brake @ S end) which seems to disappear from the train around 1935 (though there maybe a gap in my notes here) again suggesting 1935.

No.3 the RC I don't know, but maybe a Dia.187 as some were built around 1934 with similar numbers.
No.2 as established is a Dia.155 probably one of the 1934 built batch for the ECJS numbers being 1306, 1308, 1313-5, 1327-31, 1348-51
No.1 I suspect is a Dia.114 Gresley 61' 6" cor bk 3rd (4 compts) I can only find 2 listed as built but three numbers 1107-9

I don't do the Scottish end of the line but reading backwards from my notes, as it were, I believe that carriages 1 & 2 were attached the the 10am Up Scotsman.

Alan,

I am rather confused by your list.

No.1 cannot be a Diagram 114.

Opps you are of course right - shows you should never write in a hurry just before going to bed!

No side doors - it must be a Dia.212 - that would suggest we are looking at 1936 for the picture.

There is rather a lovely photo by L Hanson on page 92 of LNER Album Volume Three.

It shows 4488 heading towards Waverley station through Princes Street Gardens on 8-8-1938. The service is described as the 6.40am Aberdeen to Edinburgh train.

I am not sure about this, I think the direction of the sun makes the 9.0am from Aberdeen more likely. But, the most interesting aspect is the leading carriage in the train a Diagram 109 convertible Third Class 'Sleeper'.
