Trying to I.D D&S NER Coaches .

Post by mick b »

Just bought these via ebay.

I have confirmed so far that they are NER Coaches. I forgot to turn one around for the photo, all have steps at one end and are plain at the other end.

The floor etch just has the D&S Logo and all have the same number. No marking anywhere in the Coach bodies. They all have gas Cylinders fitted. I believe they are 7 compt 1st, 8 compt 3rd and a Brake 3rd all 52 feet long.

I am trying to find photos/instructions/drawings/running numbers/roof vents layout for them so they can be completed please. They will be getting new bogies in due course !!

Thanks for any assistance.

I saw those and thought they looked NER. Pleased you picked them up. John Smart will probably spot them for you, I don't have my diagram books at the office.

Check they're not clerestories with the top missing - I spent ages trying to work out what one I bought was and it turned out to be just that. Dan can do the clerestory etch separately.

They are D&S 52ft NER carriages and, as Jonathan thinks, they are all clerestory types:

Diagram 18 BT (3) - DS173

Diagram 14 Third - 8 compartments. DS 171

The other is a Diagram 5 Lavatory Composite with 4 First and 3 Third Class compartments. DS172

Ideally another D18 BT would make up a Composition A set for the LNER era, widely used on the NE Area main lines. The same combination BT (3), CL, T BT (3) was used on certain Leeds to Scarborough workings as well.

I have not contacted Dan for a while, so cannot help concerning availability. He always prefers people to write.
