Lukes workbench: More work on the B17/5
So, welcome to my workbench. I'd been meaning to start this for ages, but never got round to it. So it's about time
One of the projects I had started was an A1 to A3 conversion, but I didn't have the confidence to complete it and abandoned it before it was too late.
So, I cut the footplate and the front of the smokebox off and attached a GBL A4 front end. In an alternate universe, this loco (I haven't decided on an identity yet) was part of the smoke lifting experiments a few A3's took part in.

Re: Lukes workbench: a Bugatti front A3
Good to see another workbench thread getting under way, get this experimental job under your belt then you'll be back to the A3, it'll have at you until you do it you know

Continuing work on the Bugatti front A3. I removed the moulded coal load, I don't like doing this, but I don't like really high coal loads either.
As for changing the backhead: I'm not sure how I'm going to change that yet. This was one of the reasons I abandoned the A1 to A3 conversion, and I did think about just leaving it as is, but if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing properly.

Re: Lukes workbench: a Bugatti front A3
The original plan for the A1 to A3 conversion was to use an A1 to A3 conversion kit, I then realised why no one makes one.
On another note, Hattons has Railroad FLying Scotsmans for £55. Hmmmmm...
Re: Lukes workbench: a Bugatti front A3
Being a bit light hearted, I always took the A4 to be a Bugatti Nosed A3. Especially in the post war/BR era, as by making some slight modifications to the A4 boilers and fitting A3 rather than A4 safety valves they could be fitted to either class. As it stood though you couldn't uprgrade an A3 boiler by fitting it with A4 safety valves. The A3's were pressed to 220psi compared to 250psi of the A4
Re: Lukes workbench: a Bugatti front A3
I've been tackling the biggest part of this project - changing the cab. I decided I wanted a V front streamlined cab, as I've got a Streamlined font end as well.
I made 3 cuts, one along the front of the cab, and two horizontally along the sides. It didn't have to be an exact line, but the Sharpie line was there so I knew where to cut the cab.
And then a little bit later I ended up with this
I decided that I would also fit a Streamlined Banjo some, so the old one was sawn off.

Re: Lukes workbench: a Bugatti front A3
It's been a long time coming this update, and I apologize for that. But I have done some bits. Not too much has happened, it's mostly filler primer, sand, wet sand, repeat.
I decided to scrap the V front cab, so a new cab section and a firebox was used from a donor model. As you may notice, the donor backend had some blue paint on it, from where I had painted it badly in the past. I had tried to strip it before, but with limited success.
I had used Dettol mixed with water before. But wondered if using neat Dettol would work better. So with the help of the internet I gave it a go. Here's the test price after it had been soaked overnight, and scrubbed with soapy water and a toothbrush. I wasn't worried about getting this piece 100% perfect, because after this it was back to the scrap bin.
So after that, the real thing went in I've also filled around the bufferbeam, as the Hornby bufferbeam didn't quite fit to the GBL front. I'm aware it points up about 10°, but as soon as I noticed it, it was already stuck on and I had started filling. Oh well.

Re: Lukes workbench: a Bugatti front A3
Not much has happened with the Bugatti front A3 as I have been working on my model of 4489 most of the time, but I've done bits.
I was having problems with the A1 motion already fitted to the chassis, so I found my spare set of A4 motion and fitted that, and all is well.
The nameplates arrived from Narrow Planet. I chose Spion Kop because it's the one after Humourist in the numbering scheme.
Also, I've just noticed that the images I upload onto this forum aren't very high quality. Apologies for that.

Re: Lukes workbench: Golden Arrow Models B17/5
I apologise for the radio silence from me in the last year. Truth be told I haven't done a lot of modelling.
I did however recently buy the Golden Arrow models B17/5 kit, a project I've wanted to do for some time, and although I'm part way through it as I make this post, I thought I'd share progress so far.
A quick mockup of the engine and tender. I had to file quite a lot of plastic off the motion bracket and cylinders, as per the instructions.
Then both items got painted (Pheonix Precision Doncaster green for anyone playing along at home). Eagle eyed of you will notice that Spion Kop also got a coat of green.
The valences then got a coat of Humbrol 21.
I've used the buffers from the Hornby donor. They're not great, but I can't find a stockist of Maygib A4 buffers, so they'll do. The tender has also had to have all the paint stripped off it, as the paint ran and there was grease or something on the shell.

Branchlines sell the Maygib Buffers.

Re: Lukes workbench
Many moobs ago, I built a Dean's Siding one
It was too designed for the Margate B17, but I used a Bachmann B1 chassis heavily modified
Somewhere on here is a thread about it, if I can find it, I'll share a link
Looking forward to following this thread further

Re: Lukes workbench
Good morning all
I built a Golden Arrow B17, and fitted it to a Comet B17 chassis. I used a Mainly Trains B1 tender chassis (same as B17).
It ran well with a Mashima 1428 and Comet gearbox, but is now stripped to add lead in boiler, and probably a High Level gearbox.
It's a lovely looking loco and will look good alongside; A4,P2,and rebuilt W1 (when it's finished).

Re: Lukes workbench
And now, time for a long overdue due update
This was the first time I had done lining of any sort on anything; I started with the boiler band lining as I thought it would be easiest, it's not perfect but I'm happy with how it turned out
The parabolic curve lining wasn't the easiest thing ever, I messed it up first time, but second time it turned out OK. Its not the neatest at the top, but hopefully the weathering can cover that up.
Then I did the black in front of the parabolic curve.
