Slaters 4042 kit (NER/LNER 20 ton Hopper)

Post by Graeme Leary »

I have started assembling the first of 5 of this kit (with the stern admonition from other learned forum members that I will need at least another dozen later) but I am having trouble deciphering the instructions on fitting the handrails and how the provided jigs are used. The sketch is not at all clear to me.

I am sure that 'out there' there is a youtube/video clip showing this particular part of the assembly process and I'd be very grateful if anyone might have a link to it. (There is an element of urgency as I hope to wave this completed kit to our Northern colleagues in now just under a week!)

Many thanks.

Many thanks Brian/Mercator II. Certainly has cleared up the issue (but I doubt if I could put a kit together as quickly as Melanie appears to be able to do).

No time pressure, excepting your own Graeme!!

Thanks to Richard for sorting the 'tech. glitch'. Actually, an extra big thanks to Richard for getting things back so swiftly.

And thanks to Mr Leary and others for understanding there was a problem.

Best wishes to all,

John

The posting Brian/Mercator directed me to for the 4042 kit was brilliant and my current challenge is Slater's 4043 NER/LNER Birdcage Brake van. I have not been able to find one down but is there a similar youtube video showing how to assemble this kit? (I couldn't track down your posting No 6 Jonathon on RMWeb but that was probably more my 'lack of techno knowledge' to find this sort of thing unless it jumps out at me). I must say that as good as these kits are the instructions are somewhat 'opaque'.

Many thanks,

Morning Graeme,

The pictures seem to have vanished (again) from the RMWeb thread. It's getting to be too much effort to keep putting them back.

There are pictures of one I refinished on page 5 of my thread. I don't believe I've built one since I've been posting on either here or RMWeb.

Many thanks Jonathon, will have a look at your thread.

My problem is where the assembly instructions state (para 3) ' Invert the body shell and drop in the floor so that it rests on the longitudinal ribs moulded on the OUTSIDE FACES OF THE SIDES' My capitals as, unless i've put the sides and ends together incorrectly, the longitudinal ribs are on the INSIDE. Your thread will no doubt clarify this for me.

Regards
Graeme

You're undoubtedly right, Graeme. That can't work any other way.

Thanks again Jonathon (although John is showing some - quite reasonably - doubts about my soldering skills). Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Graeme
These photo's may help, they show how the hopper floor sits in relation to the sides.
Dead easy I can't see where the problem is, it can only be built one way, but then you are modelling upside down to us.

Excellent and many thanks Dave. It is a topsy turvy world south of the equator so you could well be right!

Doubt if I can show it on Sunday night but maybe the following (soldering or suggested alternatives allowing).

No soldering required for the P7s.

It is the Brake Van I was thinking about.

The only way to learn is to keep going forward. Plus, you know where to ask!

You can't get out that easily Dave, no doubt some questions will arise!
