Hornby W1 10000/60700
Pleasing to observe, on this latest tooling of the Bugatti casing, Hornby are now correcting one of the major deficiencies of past models by correctly representing the roll under of the casing from the bufferbeam to rear of cylinders.

They are also finally modelling the tender variant with additional streamlined fairings, as yet not included in the range (that I am aware of)
Re: Hornby W1 10000/60700
My W1 R3940 has arrived in one piece.
There are lots of complaints on the Dark Side of models arriving with either the Smokebox Cowling or the Top of the Tender front broken off. Most appear to be supplied direct from Hornby badly packed, and then finished off by Hermes before delievery.
Mine runs very well , the only issue I have found so far, is the mounting screw for attaching the drawbar to the Loco is too short. When tighten it locks the drawbar , loosen off enough for the drawbar to swivel and the screw then falls out of the hole . I will find a longer replacement.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a warmed improved A4 for 2022.Hatfield Shed wrote: ↑Fri Oct 30, 2020 7:56 pm Pleasing to observe, on this latest tooling of the Bugatti casing, Hornby are now correcting one of the major deficiencies of past models by correctly representing the roll under of the casing from the bufferbeam to rear of cylinders.

Glad yours arrived in good order David. I'm awaiting the arrival of mine from Kernow, here in South Australia with a degree of trepidation given comments elsewhere.

I want more than just that 'roll under', all the improvements since this model was launched and some that are well proven elsewhere. Cast metal loco body, superior mechanism, scale rods and valve gear, flanged rear truck wheel mounted in a pivoted truck frame with the outside frames hinged with a light spring return action. Some maker will eventually offer this kind of much superior package, if Hornby don't get on with it.

Mick, what do you think? To the naked eye, rather than what the camera captures, does the finish on the body / cylinders / wheels look like coloured plastic or is it painted well enough to give it an air of realism?

Graeme,
Painting I think it is excellent. They have even painted the Cab roof a different shade of Grey. Numbering is very good , and Cab detail is superb.
Tender is a beautiful model in its own right. Much better than the previous Hornby versions. Handrail now fitted on top the Tunnel and very fine handrails all round. The Brake pull rod is much finer as well ,a much finer plastic item after the previous thick plastic version. Hornby after doing all that have skimped on the mounting for the Drawbar Screw mounting , a lot of people have ones with the mouding surrunding broken off . It needs to be made thicker/stronger plastic.
Th only issue mine had was the locating screw falling out of the Drawbar at the Loco end, the two locating screw were swapped over and the problem solved.
Penny pinching time , Hornby now only provide a plastic hook for the front drawbar , quite sad they are not providing the previous excellent metal coupling . Hopefully the plastic effort will come out easily.
Front Lamps ( a first for Hornby ?) are a bit oversize, they are glued on so will be left alone unless they fall off in due course.
Lastly the truck area , very poorly designed . They should have designed a swing truck , insted of one even worse effort than the A3/4 design. The flangeless Wheels do not move at all . Far to expensive to start cutting it about. Luckily the wheels are Grey so not as noticeable as the Red versions will be on the rebuilt version.

Re: Hornby W1 10000/60700
No surprises there. But what happens when the two crosshead screws between the axles are removed? Is most of the assembly then removable? (I'll answer that myself when the late crest 60700 is in my grubby mitts, just curious for advance information on how much hacking will be required.)
Re: Hornby W1 10000/60700
According to people on the dark side, the "underneath" is part of the metal chassis. A photo shows too thick half depth holders for the axles.

Re: Hornby W1 10000/60700
I got mine last Tuesday and I'm very impressed with it, running is very smooth and the detail brilliant.
I have swapped my rear wheels for flanged ones and they rotate no problem, very free moving. All in all a very good model
in my opinion.

Re: Hornby W1 10000/60700
Judging by the early reports of broken ones turning up, I'd be wanting spares availability....
Re: Hornby W1 10000/60700

Dream on , they havent provided many spares for quite a while .
Re my W1 the Drawbar issue was quickly sorted , by simply swapping the two screws over to the other holes. The extra detail have been fitted fitted , the Cylinder Drains were a bit awkward to fit , otherwise all good.

Re: Hornby W1 10000/60700
How much of that silly toytown-hairpin-bend compatible fixed rear truck is removable when you undo the two obvious screws? If a more or less complete "bogie" is detachable, and if the rear frames have been made with thin-enough sides set the proper distance apart, then it should be possible for use on 3ft radius curves or slightly sharper ones to put proper wheels with reasonably narrow treads in a genuine rear bogie on a pivoting, sliding/swinging mount, ideally with a touch of side-control to restrain the behaviour of the rear of the loco. The W1 conversions from A4s that I've produced have been like that, unless they were for use on more severe curves.

Re: Hornby W1 10000/60700
A report elsewhere says the two screws retain a keeper plate. There's a cast metal block to saw off before a proper rear truck can be made to fit.
