Gresley 1926 Twin-articulated sleeping cars

Gents,

I am building one of the above sets in G1, in particular a First/Third Composite Set to Diags/161/162, with Running Numbers 1185/1186. Would be grateful if anyone could direct me to sources of diagrams/photos of each side of the set, showing window/door layout. (Note: I already have this info for the equivalent All First Twin Set, Nos 1204/1205. Any help appreciated. Thanks John

The diagrams you have referenced were I think built in 1932, not 1926

By coincidence it is 1186 that donated a small section of itself for the NRM collection along with the articulated joint. Sadly both have been in storage for some years.

I would suggest that you check out the Isinglass drawings, which are certainly available in 7mm and 10 mm scale.
Except with the books by Harris, you are unlikely to find accurate period photos, I do not know of the Doncaster
photo list numbers for either of these sets.

ImageJust to give more detail of this saga: I actually bought a part-completed Gresley articulated composite set. One coach is clearly the First Class and complies with all the Diag 161/No1185 drawings I have managed to source. The other coach is pencil-marked Third Class. (See attached photo). It does not comply with any of the Diag162/No 1186 info I now have. I particularly don’t recognise the weird louvered windows. Also, it only has 6 compartments, rather than the 7 which 1186 has. I an beginning to think the builder had an off day when working on the coach, but before deciding that I would have to make up new coach sides I thought I would check with you experts whether you recognise the coach as being something else

With my 'work-load' I do not really need more kits to build but your mention of dia 161/2 sleeping car coaches caught my eye as these diagrams were part of 1932, 1936 and 1939 formations of "Aberdonian' that 'Seagull' kindly supplied details of 3 years ago.

A quick look at various websites doesn't immediately tell me where you got these kits (I presume) and I'd be interested in finding out. (Don't have a conniption 'd17JAS' and 'Dave's C & W Works'!)

Hello Graeme,

My impression is that the coaches were not kits, but scratch built. I have changed my mind following further researches. One coach is a faithfull representaion of Diag 18 (

My impression is that the coaches were not kits, but scratch built. I have changed my mind following further researches. One coach is a faithful representaion of Diag 18 (typical running number is 1204). The second does not appear to be a faithful representation of anything. The nearest I can identify is Diag 95, but this was non-artic and had 7 compartments rather than the 6 of the model. I guess the builder just had a freelance approach to this one. This particularly applied to the odd louvres on the windows. Sadly no one has been able to supply more guidance on this. Regards John

Hello John,

That's a relief of sorts as I would have been tempted to add the articulated sleepers to my, 7 car summer running 'Aberdonian' set from that period.

However if of interest Isinglass Models produce the d95 3rd class sleepers in printed form. Not the easiest to work with (fairly brittle) but if that is an alternative have a look. (All the other diagrams in the set are available ex Hornby and, with a couple of minor modifications are fairly true to the prototype).
