I was away yesterday so missed this. Nice to see the end result Mick, and I agree that the custom-rolled rigid / stable roof eliminates a number of potential snags.

Thanks Graeme and to the others for their comments as well.

I will use Brass for all future similar builds, very easy to make up, cheap to buy via ebay as well.

The 'birdcage' feature really stands out. One of those features that looks so well when executed neatly and all square as here.

OK, questions.

So how did the guard use it? Never having been inside a vehicle fitted with this device my imagination tends to some wooden steps on the carriage side, a grab rail (or two) to the side of the steps, as access to a raised platform. Or could it have been a regular small stairway to a guard's office with desk and chair, brake handle and lock up provision for his journal and any valuables; while tools, detonators, spare coupling, and the like could be in a cupboard beneath. Wouldn't this somewhat interfere with baggage handling?

And what was it for? Specified locations only to enable a clear sight, or as much as possible while the train was in motion?

So far I have only seen the inside of GNR birdcage breaks,
but in that case there were a set of steps within the carriage.
the guard having a little office with a cupboard for luggage and so on and so on.

I would guess the same applies to NER too.

The poor guard would basically have needed to spend much of his journey there, mind you none
of us know how long a guard spent looking out of the duckets methinks.
I guess it would have been necessary only coming in to stations, or when the driver slowed down dramatically.

I use Glue n Glaze , I have tried Evo stick and UHU in the past.

Mick

What colour (brown) paint have you used on your ex-NER coach models? I seem to recollect that "Track Colour" (Humbrol 173 or whatever) was the colour of choice.
