D&S GCR Milk van ready for painting.
fullsizeoutput_3133.jpeg

I have looked at the Banks site

He has a built one at the bottom of this page.

https://www.steve-banks.org/modelling/332-gcr-milk-vans

I have noticed on his, he has added card behind the louvres, this not mentioned on the D&S instructions and he hasnt given a reason for the blocking.

I presume before I go any further wih my kit that the louvres would be open ? . It seem pointless to louvre the van and then block them off ?

Any comments appreciatted.

I think it's just so the van isn't see-through, Mick. I did the same with a GE Milk van of Bill's I built a few years ago.

Jonathan,

I quite like the see through effect . However it has been pointed out on the Dark side, that you cannot see through Louvres, so I will add backing to mine as well.

Thanks

I put card behind the louvres in mine, but clearly I've never taken a photo of it.

It's worth remembering that louvres are not actually see through, certainly not in 4mm scale, but
the only way you can easily reproduce them is to make them see through.
On the real thing, the louvres open and close like plantation shutters in the home.
Their job is to allow circulation of air, and so on, not to allow you to look through. Also, when in
use as full vehicles, they would have cargo of some description which would block the light going
through to the other side.

Those interested in real scale reproduction could add the angled piece on the outside, but that would
get really boring

Lovely little kit indeed Mick :D

May I please ask what brand and shade of paint you used, or is it a blend?

Precision LNER Teak Brown , the Milk van has a light top coat of thin matt black, mainly corners and in the louvre grooves.

cheers

That is after 3 attempts !!
First two times using Pressfix , I tried cutting through each louvre ,after pressing decals into the gaps, with a brand new scapel blade, both times the decals broke up in different places.
The last time as in the photos, decals pressed into gaps and a pencil line and weathering added . Job done !!

E bay find .

D&S NER Clerestory Dia 7 Compo and another Dia 18 Brake Third.

Photos show them broken down into component parts. I have just stripped the paint off both ( brush painted onto Brass without primer and lumps and bumps in paint), as they both have most of the parts present, I will probably rebuild these first , the other ex NER Clerestories shown earlier are still awating the roof etches arrival.

Has anyone a copy of the Dia 7 instructions and/or some of the Dia 7 running numbers please ?? Also needed are cast Gas Tanks x 4 and a number of the small round bottom of the Bolster? brass fittings for the bogie springs, cast Queen Posts x 4 if anybody knows a source for these items or similar please ??

I cant post photos as the files I have are too large.

They are on

Mick

You may not be aware of the NERA publication "NER Passenger Train Rolling Stock as at December 31st 1906 (numerical listing)"
Very useful if you are after Diagrams, Dates & numbers.
