More images now restored and the beginnings of an index added to page 1.

Still much to do I'm afraid.....

Many thanks Graeme for the work in reposting the images, Very early on I did pdfs of the pages I like, fortunately
before the images started to disappear, mainly as a reference I could look at when not being able to get on the old net.

I only wish more did that it's very frustrating looking at lost images on interesting topics.

I'll add some thanks too. It's so nice to be able to revisit this thread.

The built-up DJH Atlantic that I acquired some time ago because it looked as if was built neatly enough, and which I subsequently fitted with geared drive to the trailing axle, has, due to lack of time for anything better, been doing duty for the last year (or possibly two) in a rather plain approximation to LNER livery, thus:

This month, as and when possible, I've been tinkering with the livery. In order to match what was already in use on the boiler bands and forming the side panels on the tender, and to make good use of what I had in stock, I've done most of the additional white/black lining and edging using HMRS sheets. Twiddly little bits, awkward corners and wheels I've addressed using bow pen and OOO sable brush. The red lining is all bow pen work. The lovely flowing quality of my Humbrol gloss red and the stubbornness of the same makers white I have discussed elsewhere already! It was an education trying to finely line a loco that somebody else had built (I suspect with the intention of only putting it into plain black late forties livery) as no matter how neat the build appeared at first glance, I found all sorts of little blobs, nicks, fillet radii and so on where edges and joints should have been perfectly smooth, sharp and square, plus annoying slight kinks and asymmetry (including cab and firebox not quite on the same version of the centre line, making it a difficult to make the cab-front lining look right). The finished job isn't as neat as the result I achieved on the Atlantic I built for myself a few years back, but that one is in a "debatable" version of Doncaster green so as with all comparisons there are pros and cons. I think the latest one will look more than good enough as a "layout" loco especially when it is toned down by some weathering.

Here's a good illustration of the colour difference, as well as the difference that results when the builder takes the trouble to make the loco "sit down" correctly on its frames and to keep all the edges of the parts crisp and free of solder / glue (my loco on the left) rather than simply putting together whatever comes straight out of the box with not quite so much care.....

Excellent. Thank you. One of my intentions for 2018 to keep my ageing brain active is to learn how to use a bowpen.
Would you have any advice on what make/model to buy?

No advice at all regarding makes / models. I'm an ignoramus or a Philstine in that respect, mine having come as part of a cheap childhood drawing set and being completely useless until I read how to hone the tips of the nib to the necessary shapes. It may be that there are very good makes that are the right shape from new. Do others know?

Hi Graeme
Nice lining. I presume in the photo comparing the colours that the one you built (ie on the left) was painted with Railmatch Doncaster green?

Although subsequently weathered to moderate the impression, the earlier Atlantic on the left was painted using my first tin of Phoenix Precision dull Doncaster Green. I was never wholly happy with the colour in the tin or the colour as applied in raw form to the model, thinking it too dark and mossy, (almost a darker version of sage) although several others seemed to think there was nothing to worry about and accepting that lighting conditions always play havoc with colour judgement and colour matching I eventually accepted it and got on with finishing the livery. I lacked the experience and confidence at the time to declare that the colour was wrong and to insist on a replacement tin in a more convincing shade. I wouldn't accept it as Doncaster green paint these days! Two subsequent tins have been much more convincing in shade.

I'm sure that picture will be very happy sitting there. It certainly won't be disturbed, hindered or criticised by me.

A lovely 'what if' with the V2! I was hoping to see a 'production batch' P1 at Stevenage but sadly wasn't to be... :(

Graeme, what a lovely job you've done on both those C1s. To be honest, while I can see the difference in the shades of apple green, I don't think it is too much of a problem as surely there would have been variations due to slightly different mixing of paints, weathering/fading in service and how long it had been since the last repaint. I think those slight differences stop two locomotives of the same class looking too uniform in their appearance.

I assume that we will be able to view these two at 'Ally Pally' in a couple of months (albeit, without the pleasure of being able to discuss these and other subjects with the owner)?
