I want to have an A2/3 & a Peppercorn A2 on my layout. How wrong would it look if I renamed/numbered a Peppercorn A1? To my uneducated eye the differences aren't that great.

I reckon the whole point of railway modelling - or any other hobby, for that matter - is to bring happiness to the person doing it. It's your model railway; they're your eyes. So if you're happy with the compromise you suggest, that's the end of the argument, isn't it?

Paraphrasing Bullhead, there are in fact two rules to model railways:

1.) Have fun!

2.) It is my damn railway, and I'll do what I want :-)

We all have to make compromises, and it is a personal decision where you make that compromise.

Back to your question, one of the more significant differences between the A1 and A2 was the wheel size. The A1s also seem grander, to me anyway. I guess we'll see if that is true when Tornado and Blue Peter are eventually placed next to each other...
