Re: Edgware GN, Time for a D3
G'day Gents
The D3 has progressed a bit, splashers/cab, bufferbeam, but as you well know by now I usually have a couple of things on the go at once, so not to disappoint anyone, here's job No 2, I have a few Thompson coaches (Tri-Ang) and wanted to upgrade them, but looking through one of my LNER books I noticed the similarity with LNER Tourist Stock, I did a bit more checking, (there's not a lot of info about them) but I reckoned, there was a Articulated pair in there, amongst, these old coaches, to make a pair, I've used two full coaches, (Brake third + a Comp + 2 sets of Brake third sides).
So far I have one half of the artic, the other half gets started tomorrow, here's some pics for you, remember it's a work in progress.
There are plenty of bits left over, maybe a BZ and a Full Brake may take to the tracks later.

Re: Edgware GN, Time for a D3
Good morning all esp Manna
I've wondered about converting the Thompson coaches in Tourist stock, so I'm glad to see somebody attempt it.
My notes (sparce)
Twin third opens; 51'2" each 4 windows at artic end, three plain end
Brake third open; 61'6", 3 windows, door, 3 windows, short brake end
Buffet car 61'6 side one; door, seven windows, door, two windows
Buffet two 61'6 side two; door, 4 windows, small window, one window, small window, door, window.

Thanks for that EN, using the Tri-Ang dimensions (window spacing's Etc.) the (half) artic, comes out at 225mm= 56'3" so 5' over length, so certainly Not a scale model, it might be possible to shorten it more but that would involve a heck of a lot more cutting and shutting, maybe the best solution would be one of those 'new fangled' silhouette cutters to overlay the sides

Re: Edgware GN, Time for a D3
Hi Manna.
Interesting conversion, I had wondered about it myself.
Some bits of info for you.
Early stock was plywood clad and the aluminium window frames
were proud of the sides, later 1939 built stock were steel clad
and the window frames were flush with the sides. Some early
carriages were reclad in steel.
Mid period carriages had an aluminium strip to cover the horizontal
cladding joint, no strip on steel clad carriages
Early roofs were painted white, 1939 stock had dark grey roofs.
Ply carriages had loco green up to the waist and cream above,
including the window frames, colours divided with a thin black line.
1939 steel clad carriages the green was up to the bottom of the window.
Early top lights were 3 section, 1939 were 4 section and deeper.
The body colour was taken round the outer ends but the inner ends
over the articulated bogie were black, this was soon altered to
black to all ends.
Lettering - LNER in 5" high gold letters shaded red black and brown
spaced 9" apart.
Carriage letter 8" high black Gill Sans
Carriage number 5" high letters as LNER spaced 5¾" apart.
Black line ½" wide.

Thank you Dave, a lot of useful information, I'm going to finish these coaches, even though they're over length, they'll look the part, this is how they look today.

Re: Edgware GN, Time for a D3
G'day Gents
I'm still alive, been building a back verandah , one of the jobs put off until retirement, now it's almost finished and the weather has broken, wind, rain, and a lot colder, down to 4c overnight, it's time to get back to model railways.
The D3 hasn't progressed much, just a bit tidier.
The Artic twin, is nearing completion, (photo's soon)
Back working on the J1, I tried using a modified N2 chassis, with the original pick ups, they're far to strong to allow the wheels to rotate, so I've gone back to the old chassis and made new pick up's that won't drag so much.
Fiddling about with the C12, have fitted Romford driving wheels, just have the pick ups and coupling rods to make and fit, the last pair, just a tad to long.
And a mystery loco has been started, I had an old N2 body that I wanted to play around with, have a go...

Good morning all
From the look at the length of the boiler, I would guess at the R1, which was originally designed for the London Suburban services.

Not a G5, got one of those, the cab is off of a N2, that got made into the N1, No this is a G1, a well known Ally Pally loco, the clue is the runningplate, and the same slashers as the N2 even the tanks are very close, the bunker has been shortened and I'll have to make a new cab

Good morning all
A good idea, Manna, look forward to seeing the finished loco.
In the past I have looked at the G1 and thought that a SEF C12 with the footplate cut short and the bunker trimmed, would produce one.
However, never thought of chopping a N2.
