Ay up!

Yet another googly. While removing the tender chassis for installation of pickups, the tender body disintegrated. Again. Now, i know i assembled it with Carr's and cleaned up the castings before soldering but the joints were as brittle as something very brittle. More filing, sanding and general cleaning, followed by fresh tinning then soldering back together. To add some more steangth, i mixed up some Poxy Resin and ran a generous fillet down the inside of each joint to add strength and will add more Monday. Last thing we want is for the whole thing to disassemble itself when the GPO Boot Boys fire it from their Howitzer!!!

This weekend promises to be fun! It's the Anniversary of King Charles II hiding at Moseley Old Hall near Wolverhampton this weekend so I have volunteered to be Father Huddlestone, the family's resident Roman Catholic priest. Interesting. I was brought up a Methodist and am now a Pagan.

The temptation to play him as Father Jack is strong........

Ay up!

My first attempt at tender pickups for this Atlantic has been an unmitigated failure. I tried using .45mm n/s wire but it was either exerting so much pressure on the wheels as to stop them from turning or not passing any current at all.

Phosphor bronze strip now on order!

Ay up!

Things are not so good here at BB Towers.

We have been caring for Mrs BB's Elderly father who is fading fast. He has now lost the use of his legs, his upper body is becoming ever more feeble but his mind is as sharp as it ever was. He can be argumentative and the sounds of battle echoing along the passageways in recent months have not helped my state of mind much! Care is now required round the clock so my extra curricular activities of volunteering at Moseley Old Hall and occasional linesiding at the SVR are on hold for the foreseeable future.

However, odd snatches of time do become available and the pickups for Mel's Atlantic Tender have been made and glued to the plastic tender chassis block. And the remainder of the rust on the wheels sanded away plus a surface polish with the ol' fibreglass brush! Joints are being reinforced as and when 10 mins here and there become available. It is just about 30 mins work from being ready for paint. But thereby hangs another tale. After painting, then solder the wires to the motor and jobsagoodun!!!!!

Rest assured I am doing my duty as Admin, checking in daily but time to post is at a premium

I've not gone for good - just for a while.

Ay up!

Well, the DR was a waste of space! In the early hours of Tuesday morning he fell out of his chair and the BBs were unable to put him back in his chair. So we called an ambulance, 2 young ladies arrived with a very clever pneumatic jack sort of thing. From there they got him back into his chair and asked if a DR had seen him. They were horrified to discover that not only had DR DIY refused to alert Social Services but he had prescribed a very low dose of anti biotics and an analgesic cream to cure weeping sores! The ambulance crew alerted Social Services.

Tuesday morning, the Social Worker visited and her eyes went round at the tale of DR DIY. She arranged for physio to visit who said there was nothing they could do and he needed to spend some time in a care home. Angry refusal from Father In Law! The Social Worker revisited while they there, recruited Mrs BB and bullied him into going in! While this was going on, a van arrived with a hospital bed and a few other bits for us. No way could we get it in so they will be back.

Wednesday, the Social Worker visited again and was Not Happy. She chivvied the District Nurses who, once again, failed to arrive. So on Thursday, she visited again, lowered the bulldozer blade and bullied the office into sending two nurses. They asked if he could get to his feet. I tried lifting him (I have worked in an old folks' home) which brought screams of pain from us both. My back had finally given in!

Cue another ambulance to take him to a home for some Respite Care. Meanwhile we have to prepare the room for the bed etc next week!

Why us? As Colour Sergeant Bourne says "Because we're here, lad. There's nobody else."

Anyway, some progress on Mel's Atlantic. The joints have been reinforced with Araldite and the loco assembled. The pickups are done and just need soldering to the loco. I've bought some filler to make good the body so hopefully should be ready for paint before too long.

Wish me luck!!!!

Ay up!

F-I-L now in a care home and enjoying flirting with the nurses there! See, a young woman in uniform brings out the best in all of us! We are now visiting him twice a day which leaves little time or energy for much else. At least the bed and hoist are now here but will we need them? He was only supposed to be in there for 7 days but is now starting his 2nd week with no talk of release as yet. This is after 24hrs in New Cross Hospital where a catheter was fitted!

I'll keep you posted on this.

Ay up!

Release of elderly FIL gets closer. We are now waiting for the care package (4 visits a day) to be organised, then training on lifting using a hoist (which I have designs on as lifting gear for the car!!) and measurement for the sling.

Hopefully, once this happens, we will be able to have a shift round to allow me access to my workbench.

Just to recap, Mel, your Atlantic is ready for paint and I have screw couplings to fit to the buffer planks.

On another note I have to repair my Johnson 1P because her rear buffer beam has come adrift. So that may well donate it's screw coupling to the Atlantic.....

Ay up!

News from BB towers. F-I-L is now home and making a bit of a performance. Mrs BB is learning not to run in every time he Calls Upon His Maker and things are a little tense.

However, MAJOR NEWS!!!! I have cleared some space around my workbench allowing me to do some work! So, the Atlantic has had its filler sanded down and needs another, thin application to the tender rear then she's ready for paint. So nearly there.

Close enough to consider my next Big Project. Will it be the long stalled Patriot or should I return to the Ways of Easternness with a part built K1?

Looks like that Patriot may have to wait some more!!!

Ay up!

Well, the question of my next project is answered. A friend came round with an O gauge GWR 0-4-2T. Biggest lump of white metal you ever saw! Just needs a gearbox. Oh, and the rods filing to shape. Wish me luck....

As regards the rest, elderly F-I-L is now rapidly deteriorating. He was almost totally unresponsive to any stimulus today and has been moved to a private side room. Mind you, so has Swearing Sidney but that's to save the ward from his incessant cussing.

A 3rd application of filler to the Alantic's tender rear awaits sanding down. May get a chance this weekend. Hopefully.

A bad day today.

Mrs BB and I had a talk with elderly FIL's consultant. Our decision has been a difficult one. He has been suffering from a series of Urinary Tract Infections which are being treated with anti biotics but he is not making any progress towards recovery.

The hospital will now be offering only palliative End Of Life care. So pain and anxiety meds, food is he wil eat it, plenty of fluids.

They don't call it the morgue anymore, it is the Swan Suite and those who are terminally ill and nearing the end have a swan sign put on their beds.
