Interesting. Look at all that unrealistic daylight that has appeared above the middle of the bogie.........

I'm hoping that there will be realistic side frames / bogies in a detailing pack.
Any other areas you'd like me to get close up pictures of?

Ta. "As much as you can photograph" would no doubt provide food for thought or criticism by one or other enthusiast on here.

I got into York a bit late today and didn't get to the NRM until 15:30, so didn't bother paying for railfest today and spent an hour and a half trying to get in 4771's cab. Anyway, I'll be in at opening time tomorrow and will snap as many pictures as I can :)

We have a surprise:
And now for something completely different.jpg
Anyway, here's the bogie:

I was very fortunate in that the rep on the NRM stand took the prototype 506 out of the case for me to handle to and photograph, but I'll put those on a new thread. The pictures above are from the Bachmann case.

I'm no expert, but that looks excellent to me.

Oh lummy, I can see lots of problems arising with the amount of slack in that front bogie pivot. Do you know if the running plate above that bogie is the standard cast metal or plastic?

Having originally been in the running for the NRM "Butler Henderson", I had to withdraw a week or so ago, as I stumbled across an unbuilt Perseverance kit for the D11/1 with instructions, so convinced myself that it had to be bought and eventually built.

Morgan has kindly provided some very copious handwritten notes on why he thought the Rod Neep-designed kit - more particularly its tender - was a pile of sh*te and, armed with this, some AGW P4 wheels, High Level hornblocks and bearings, plus E.M. Johnson's book "Great Central Locomotives, vol.2", I think we're in for an entertaining time

Coincidentally I also unearthed an inside motion kit - cranks, eccentrics, cruciform crossheads, the lot - which, as luck would have it, was also designed by Rod Neep specifically for this engine. To show just how convoluted the finescale industry can be, the design was by Rod Neep, but the etch bears Peter K. Dawson's name, whilst the cranks, eccentrics and crossheads were provided by Exactoscale!

Mine will be turned out as "62660", as I can't face having a go at full GC livery :( , so no valance skirts over the driving wheels, but with the wide-bodied, self-trimming tender with full-width footplate that she took with her into preservation.

It's probably worth pointing out that the loco, when handled was very heavy and the centre of gravity was just behind the lead driver. Add the motor (of which this sample did not have) and the highly sprung bogie to the equation and voila, the loco sits and runs perfectly on the track

Same as the earlier O1 comment by me.

This is a rough prototype ,it does not mean the actual model will be anything like this when produced. Hopefully it will have a motor for a start

Well there's no point having a motor in a show model that would never be run, but I did ask on the bachmann stand if their's was motorised (reason below), to see if they could run it on a nearby layout but the reps were pretty certain nothing in the case was motorised.

The prototype in the Bachmann case was more 'progressed' than the one in the NRM case. It had a proper wired drawbar, and it appeared to have a 'hornby esque' plug and socket in the tender.

The coal moulding is considerably more realistic than in the 04, but the disturbing thing is how light the tender is. I'd put it as lighter than the K3's

An ideal home for a block of lead and a revised drawbar to put more weight on the coupled wheels. Will it pass my "20+ coaches, including brass ones, challenge"???

So long as I can get 10 on and some steam up....
Now how would that going round the Beeg Blue Beastie?

Bachmann Scottish D11 now reviewed on BRM website - but that tender isn't inherited from the O4, is it?????
