Can anybody help need pics/track plans of Hitchin around the 50s. I have a track plan of the late 1890s but could do with a later one. Realy do need photos of tation,Goods yard, etc. Any good books or web sites worth looking at.

Regards

Alan,

I have a copy of Great Northern Railway Engine Sheds volume 1 by Griffiths and Hooper which is published by Booklaw Publications. ISBN 1-8996248-8-0.

This book has a section on the loco shed arrangements at Hitchin with 6 pages. There are 9 photographs and the full track layout diagram for Hitchin station and environs.

There are two photos of the Stothert and Pitt coaler. If you want a kit for it in 4mm scale, I have one spare.

Alan,

The track diagram is dated 1947, which should fit in well with your 1950s date.

It is a good job you are working in N scale. You will still need well over 14 feet.

Thanks for that, will have to now get hold of this book. I am planning a layout that is 19 feet long.

Phil Howard's new book, Take the Train from Hitchin: A Journey into Our Local Railway Heritage published by the Hitchin Historical Society in October 2006, £9.95, contains a mass of excellent information about Hitchin station, including maps and some track plans.
