Re: The workbench of a Ribena drunkard!
glad I could help in some small way
now then, I'm currently building a Q6 from the Dave Alexander stable, from the chassis up using a High Level gear box with a 2mm bored worm gear.
I have a motor for it which uses a 2mm shaft and a worm gear already attached. Although this would seemed almost perfect I do fear that the worm gear wouldn't mesh properly with the High Level gear box.
I have tried to remove it, but it appears to be thread locked tight and if I am able to I don't think the shaft is long enough anymore so best move on.
I have been looking at other motors and the only ones available with a 2mm shaft are the mashima 14/28.
Would these be able to fit inside a Q6 body or would I have to look into getting a smaller motor and possible a new gear worm?

Re: The workbench of a Ribena drunkard!
Somehow I've found myself living in a cottage with no money with a dog, girlfriends and soon to be kitten. I don't know how it all works out in the end... probably half drunk at the end of a railway line but happy thoughts for now!
I've been weathering again, finally a moment from my busy schedule of line learning and dog walking into order to finish this little beauty.
A Crosti 9F. Now... as anyone who remembers or paid any attention will know, I primarily model BR (NE) region at the moment so I've either gotten bored or had a mental breakdown (or both). Although both are very plausible at the moment, either are entirely accurate. This is actually my friends, made up from a Railroad 9F using Dave Alexander part and possibly a Golden Arrow tender body. The exactly details are lost on me so I'll go back to happily assuming.
But nothing really new to report here. Currently I've been making up a manual of weathering techniques which once (kind of) finished I shall be more than happy to share with anyone. but don't expect anything in the next five minutes.
It fully works (which I am happy with) and is currently evading the chewing habits of said dog whilst it waits to be present to my friend

Here are so more pictures of my creation... I suspect that I may have to start asking for money in the future... but he kindly pays me by driving me to places and offloading any spare engines he has.

Actually... the Q6 can wait. This might possibly be my next project.

Living with more than one girlfriend at a time?
Congratulations. That is some achievement, and one that I never mastered
Like the Crosti 9F though, especially the weathering which looks very much like how most of them were in their final years.

Strang - it's not as good as you'd think.
Yeah all I had to go on was mid 60's pictures. Nothing much in the way of when they actually had the Crosti boiler fitted. Mind you, my mate did want it looking s****y (I just hope he mean't well worn rather than bad workmanship!
notascoobie: Nah, I'm still about just busier

But I don't care, I promised I'd do and doing it I am

Re: The workbench of a Ribena drunkard!
Well here's the part finished 8F I was working on. It does work too which pleases me a lot.
I need to try and remember what I've put on now.
All I really know is that due to the type of model it is that a lot more work went into it than I had originally envisaged.
Saying that, I have really enjoyed this build and I've been itching to get the painting work started however that can wait as my Q6 kit is becoming impatient too.
I have modified the tender bulkhead and added a very basic mechanical stoker to the cab but is this will be manned i have left the other bits of detailing out just for the sake of economy.
In addition to the general updates. the modern fittings that you may see on the finished product are;
AWS Battery and fittings
Air braking equipment (westy-house pump, air tanks, brake pipes and plumbing)
Stone generator with headlights
Snowploughs
Lempour chimney
Roller bearing on axel boxes
Radio antenna
gas producing Combustion System
Speedo
Forward and reversing lights (non-working)
I've removed one of the lamp irons as by the time the loco were modified the reporting numbers had come into use (though by the dated I'm setting my engine in the reporting numbers would have log since vanished too)
The livery will still stand at overall Blue with yellow buffer beams and small double arrows and the number will be 988/193. i might add a strip of plastic over the smokebox number plate so it will fit.
You might have noticed the dummy coupling on the loco is missing... well, I'm just waiting to add the modified one on to it after painting.
Please, let me know what you think. Even rivet counters.
Actually, i really want to hear the rivet counter shout out " If you finish this, I will stop modelling all together and stand make din front of the queen" stuff because i think it's funny and plus, I'll hold them up to it - at gunpoint if necessary.
Oh look what came today!

Re: The workbench of a Ribena drunkard!
You might want to consider an auxiliary tender -water only - for the 8F if it is expected to have any range of operation. Cuts down the number of the cranes and troughs BR have to maintain. But if it is intended for short freight hauls only on fixed routes, coal field to power station for example, then no need. (This was a credible option for a rationally managed BR.)

Re: The workbench of a Ribena drunkard!
Hmm good point.
The idea was to consulate the few remaining steam locomotives in the Scottish, Welsh and Teesside areas. The southern and WCML used diesel traction to supplement the mass electrification in those areas post 1970, the western region also saw its fill of diesels to work along side their hydraulics. That would see the pilot scheme diesels primarily located for in those areas. The less successful ones would have found themselves being scrapped or kept in small numbers to supplement steam traction in those areas.
I've even envisaged an idea using converted hulks of surplus diesels to use with specialised locos (9F's and the likes) on merry go round trains to help with that 5mph restriction.
Sorry on a bit of a tangent there. To cut a long story short. Most locomotives on the north east area would have went as far as York, Newcastle and Leeds.Their main base of operation being from Thornaby Depot. 9F's on MGR trains running to Drax power station and their associated coalfields, 8F's working primarily on oil and steel trips possibly handing over to diesel locos at York or Leeds, anything going to Scotland possibly handing over to another steam loco in Newcastle.
The only real long distance journey would be the Middlesbrough - Carlisle cross country I'd like to make powered mainly by 5MT locos. I've have a think about any further additions such as water tenders however.

Re: The workbench of a Ribena drunkard!
A taste of things to come guys.
I managed to hand paint the bodes ready for the transfers and gave chassis and uncleaned bits.
I haven't yet added the separate parts and wondering if I should it before or after weathering.
I'll give you a speculative history on this individual loco at my next post which should show the finished article.
