Re: My Workbench - and who knows, one day maybe even a layou
I think the pannier is 7'3" 8'3" so spot on for J52 but a bit short for the J50.
Having got the J50 done I gave it a coat of varnish and low and behold its reacted with the paint this time and will need stripping down. Grumble!

While trying to repair the observation coach and now the J50, I have to also started to try to expand my skills.
First with trying soldering an ABS whitemetal hopper wagon. Took a bit of getting used to but really quite liked the way solder is so quick and can be undone if you put parts on upside down!

Also have begun to construct my first chassis. Its a Bristol models one for a Wills N7.
The kit doesn't come with bearings. Does this mean I don't need them? The axle fits ever so slightly tighter than would be free runnning as it is. Can I just open out the holes in the frame very slightly?

Re: My Workbench - and who knows, one day maybe even a layou
If you are careful (!) the existing holes can be opened out to take standard Romford bearings. This approach is more favourable, as the bearing wears and can be replaced when necessary, rather than trying to source a new chassis.
Look forward to seeing further updates.

I'm also drawn to the commemorative, let's hope Bachmann will produce 6165 Valour.

Thanks for the advice. What is the best tool to open them out?

All depends on the axle size you are thinking of using, but that sounds about right to me.

Lima J50 detailed, repainted, new bunker and on the Bachmann chassis.
N7 chassis up and running. Its not as smooth as I would like and a bit loud, maybe running in will help. It does however work and that for a first attempt is pretty important!

Re: My Workbench - and who knows, one day maybe even a layou
Turns out the pony truck was the hardest part of the chassis. I am pretty sure I built it as I was supposed to but ended up having to cut off the whole rear of the chassis, about a inch to get it to go round corners... Have repositioned where the body attaches and will build a dummy rear of the chassis in plasticard.
The boday has been quite enjoyable to solder together, although it sits too high on the chassis at the moment and the boiler fittings are just blue tacked on.

Re: My Workbench - and who knows, one day maybe even a layou
It shouldn't be nervous. My J50 told me it has never felt better since the surgery!
I am however worried about getting the varnish out, I seem to have very little luck with the stuff, and I have stripped down and repainted the J50 more times than I care to remember...

Ay up!
Try aerosol varnish. Sprayed gently. Works for me.

N7 sitting on its chassis properly and another pic with detail added. Now ready for tidying up and primer.
