Louth Turntable
OK New Thread,
So here's a question. Louth had a turntable that we Know, as depicted here in two maps, one is from Alf Ludlams book on Bardney to Louth, and also my map posted below. But when you look at the ariel picture carefully, the Turntable has a set of buffers at the southern end any thoughts? BTW, Regular helpers to Billy's Project Louth, the carriage in the Aerial Pic, is that a Thompson? Regards all,
Billy

Re: Louth Turntable
Looks to me like the turntable was on a different road to the drawings. The second one shows an embankment imediately behind the turntable, yet in the picture there are two roads. Its also parallel to the station building in the picture. Perhaps he just got it wrong???
Its good to know where you stand. Saves making a fool of yourself later......
Re: Louth Turntable
This picture seems to confirm it was up the side of the station in the 50s at least anyway!

G'Day Gents
I would say that, for what it's worth, A. The turntable has been moved !! a bit closer to the shed. or B, A new siding (or two) has been added behind the T/T and some of the embankment has been removed.

Re: Louth Turntable
I remember that OS maps of Louth for different dates between say 1890 and 1960ish showed quite noticeable changes around the station, as do various aerial or high-vantage-point photos, some of which appear in different Ludlam books on the related East Lincs lines, so take care to choose the correct version.......

Re: Louth Turntable
Yep, all points valid.
So you can see my dilemma trying to model a real life location, to use as depicted or have some artistic license and interpret what I see from the photo.
All of the photo's I have access to that show the TT, indicate it has buffers at the southern end, I think this was a sticking point with the Mablethorpe Branch loop.
Out of interest, does that look like a water tower in the distance behind the Engine Sheds? Billy

Re: Louth Turntable
The Answer is:
The track plan is from 1912 or thereabouts.
the photo is supposed to of been taken in early BR days, circa 1949.
also, a new 50ft turntable was apparently installed in 1938.
No idea whose design the coach is, but it is a Non-gangway coach - probably a design of Thompson's.
The Squarish patch of white behind the shed does appear to be the top of a watertank.
All info from Great Northern Engine Sheds Volume 2, The Lincolnshire Loop, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire.

Re: Louth Turntable
Mate,
Short concise and to the point, gold star sir? Top info though thanks. So in a 62/63 layout the TT should in fact be modelled as per the photo with a set of buffers at the southern end? Although the engine shed came down in 58ish, this is where some artistic license may have to come in over that period........
I suspect that photo and the other view of the goods shed available for viewing on the LWR website was taken from the top when the new Malt Kilns were being built 48/49.
Thanks,
Billy

Re: Louth Turntable
The two coaches in the background appear to be LNER non-corridor coaches, the one wholly visible being an all third, the other one you can't really tell. The one in the foreground is a Howlden ex-GN brake coach.

Re: Louth Turntable
I do know a man who has built up quite a good list of specific coaches known to have been at Louth circa 1950. Unfortunately, he is not inclined to post on this forum now owing to an incident last year which resulted, he felt, in unfair treatment of one member.
Bear in mind that the coach selection at Louth by that time included not just former GNR and LNER-built types. Transfers, and then the introduction of all-line-control of passnger rolling stock resulted in some former GC coaches being seen at Louth, and I think Ludlam's Louth-Bardney book lists a former NB eight-wheeler in regular use on that branch. I'm reasonably sure that some ex-NE coaches made appearances too, so don't narrow down the line of thinking too much when trying to identify coaches at Louth.

Re: Louth Turntable
The coach in the right back ground of the photo looks to me like a NER composite, and I suspect the one hiding behind the building is of similar parentage.
The NER coaches were cascaded to the GN section in the 30s. After the war because carriage control was centralised all sorts of transfers happened. There were, for instance, ex-GE coaches that worked the Barton branch so they are also possible at Louth.

Thanks Kindly Bill.
Re: Louth Turntable
The truncating of the track plan came with the installation of the larger turntable, Ex Doncaster shed, (Refurbished) along with several other changes to the area layout though I have seen several dates for this over the years, the location of the pit was still visible in my days in and out of there, ABM servicing, now long vanished under houses
