I shall not be able to see the article until I have a trip into town tomorrow at the earliest. I shall being hedging my bets by buying up a good stock of my favourite Humbrol enamels while on the same mission. I'm also told we have a new shop selling Hornby / Bachmann in town, so I shall have to poke my nose in there too. I wonder if any of our local "usual suspects" are running the place?

Model Rail article now in my possession. Jean wonders whether MR have her agent's details as she is keen to receive her appearance fee ASAP.

New local model shop nothing at all to get excited about. Minimal stock, mainly aircraft kits, stacked up to create a display that catches a child's eye. No name on the front of the premises, which I know to be quite extensive "behind and above" yet only a fairly small shop area in use at the front. Premises rumoured to be on a 12 month "trial" low rent lease. Operated by a former local market trader with no known current or past interest in the modelling hobby himself, so possibly only there to try to make money and unlikely to be able to give any good advice or show any interest in stocking "specialist" items. Don't rely on the truth of this, but it was also said to me by somebody who might know that the trader used to trade on Lincoln market but "had to leave".

One annoying aspect of my visit to town this morning: Whilst discovering that my preferred independent newsagent hadn't yet received any stock of MR and that I therefore had to go to WHS, I did notice that the independent is again stocking GBL, when they seemed to have stopped altogether during the Summer. I wonder if I could have bought a couple of Butler Hendersons there five or six weeks ago instead of putting up with all of the nonsense and delays via the "Customer Services" phone centre???? GRRRRR!!!!!!!

It probably hardly needs me to tell you but this is a model of the J21 that is still with us, (6)5033 (ie with post-1946 number). It was a lovely sweet runner, and featured inside working valve gear.


Paused in the Down Goods Yard, it formed part of a chance meeting of ex-NER, ex-GCR & ex-GER locos, deep in ex-GNR territory.

Perhaps Dave can enlighten us with details of the loco construction and the vehicles it towed.

The story of the J21 starts ....here..., about halfway down the page, and the vehicles I brought are on subsequent pages. Sorry I couldn't find more of the more interesting vehicles to bring, and sort out more suitable brake vans!

Wakening this thread from one of its traditional slumbers for a shameless reminder that this time next week we should be packing up the van and off to the Nottingham East Midlands Exhibition 21st / 22nd March with virtually half the layout. We shall be appearing in 'preview' format, in anticipation of a full show appearance at the 2016 show. Alongside us should be 3279 of this parish, up to his elbows in resin, as he demonstrates his inimitable techniques. No doubt some of the more recent projects from his thread will be in evidence, either on his stand or shuttling up and down Grantham station.

I've just stumbled upon the YouTube clip of this layout, looks like there may be a couple of forum members enjoying a running session if the green shirts are anything to go by. I'd love to join in on the fun, I might even have some appropriate rolling stock to play with, just the small matter of a few thousand miles and a hefty fuel bill to make a visit. Great layout, hope your able to produce some more videos in the future.

Hello Paul,

Glad you enjoyed the video. That was filmed by Tom Foster last year and I am very grateful to him for taking the time to compile a lovely record of that running session.

I do occasionally take and publish video clips on youtube. However, I haven't gotten round to getting myself equipped with video editing software, teaching myself how to use it and thus compiling a properly edited film as Tom did. I fear that would take time, which would be time taken from the primary task of building the layout itself!

I do appreciate however that for folks looking in from the other side of the world a video might be the only way to enjoy seeing the layout in operation so whenever and however the opportunity presents itself for further filming, we'll try and produce some more.

Here's a rare sight - a new vehicle for the layout, out-shopped by myself (as opposed to the more prodigious outputs of other co-conspirators!)
Will be running over the weekend at Nottingham, all being well. Apologies to those who have already seen this in 'the other place'.
