Can anyone help me in my quest, I am building an LNER layout based here in York, (slightly North off) and I'm running the Farish RTR V2 Coldstreamer, but I'm trying for another one, so I can run it as St Peter's School York AD627.

Does anyone know of someone who can convert it for me? Nthusiast seem only to do modern stuff.
It would only need the 3 running numbers and the name plates changing, bus as I'm still fairly new to modeling (just over a year) I don't want to muck up a good model

Any advice would be good, or where I can get the bits, as Fox only seem to have V2's in 00 gauge

Mark,

Fox's made a St Peters School nameplate in 4 mm scale for me. So they have the art work. I have attached a photo of the plate fitted to my old Bachmann V2. It is correctly offset from the centre driving axle. I really must get round to painting those tyres.

I don't know if Jackson Evans list it in their 2mm catalogue because I can't find it on line.

The only way to become a modeller is to practice, so don't give up too soon. It has taken me 45 years. I made a much better job of my latest V2, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry which is on the Locomotive pages.

Mark,
I can't help with a modification, but elsewhere you asked about the LNER "GP Tank"...

This is a generic model, probably best described as a hybrid of an LMS Jinty and a Holden J67/J69. (so half LNER!)

Back in the 1970s, Farish did produce a "Holden Tank". Liveries included GER, LNER, and BR. Apparantly pretty good for the time. You occasionally see them on EBay, but I've always been outbid.
Then somewhere around the early 80s it was replaced with the GP Tank. I don't know why, and I hear the GP Tank is a poor runner even compared to the older Holden Tank.

Richard

Thanks, I'll get in touch with Fox see if they can do a 2mm plate for me, the 4mm St Peter's School is the only plate listed!

Also I got my LNER tank off Ebay, and the desciption says recently overhauled by the railway Doctor, so if that means anything, it seems ok!

My Dad as a young boy lived in Leicester, and the house backed on to a railway, so I asked him as he can remember seeing St Peter's School York AD627, and he says it was black, then came back saying it was red like the Coldstreamer ones (at LNER times) and St Peter's School have the plate on the wall at the School, and as I live near and have to pass to get in to town, where I'm off tomorrow, I will pop back from my Grans house to see if I can see it, or see if anyone can get me access to photograph it, and though being a boarding school, it might be closed by now!!

And can anyone help, apart from the named ones, does anyone know the numbers/range of the rest?

The V2s were numbered 60800 to 60893. I cannot recommend strongly enough that you find yourself a copy of Ian Allan's British Railway Locomotives Combined Volume. It is a most comprehensive reference book.

The locos were painted apple green initially. Then black during WW2. From 1948 they were painted in lined black livery, then from 1957 in Brunswick Green.

Were you meaning the colour of the number plates?

The colour of the panel below the curved nameplate changed over the years and to get it right is difficult. I based my model on a black and white photo in Rail Centres : York by K Hoole, page 127, and it is impossible to say what colour they were from that.

I believe that the plates were brown whilst the loco was in apple green, possibly black or dark brown when the loco was black and then brown when the loco was in Brunswick green. In actual fact when a loco was dirty you had to stand close just to see the lettering and any colours were lost under a layer of rust and soot. It was this all over air of neglect that put me off train spotting after 1962.

In Working Steam: Gresley V2s by Gavin Morrison there is a 1963 colour photo of KOYLI in a dirty brunswick green livery. It is impossible to see the colour of the numberplate below the filth.

As regards the original plates: It is not normal to disclose the location of valuable original nameplates, they must be kept secure, but be warned that they if they came off locomotives in a run down filthy state they usually got repainted, probably with Dulux and the colour would be of doubtful authenticity. There are also replicas around, and sometimes the original wooden foundry patterns were presented to the personage, school or regiment concerned at the naming ceremony.

It seems that there were two sets of nameplates as they appear both with and without the scroll below St Peter's cross keys (these are the keys to heaven). See Yeadons Register Appendix 1.

If anyone out there does find an original colour photograph of the loco, St Peter's School, please, please post it. I am not changing anything until I am absolutely sure I am right. I now think that the panel colour was probably very dark brown and in which case it would be almost impossible to distinguish this colour from black between the white or cream diagonal lines in 4mm scale, let alone 2mm scale.

To add to the confussion, at times there were 15 or 22 diagonal lines, sloping one way or the other.

I got the book that Richard advises on the V2 page, which I got off Amazon, the only problem is that it is all (apart from the newer Green Arrow) all in black and white...although a good comprehensive book, it does not include on picture anywhere of Coldstreamer that I'm running!

I have asked Fox, and waiting for a reply, but I have found Morays Models and filled out there custonising form with them suppliing the donar model

Thanks Mark T

A book that might help!

I have a reply from Fox on the Nameplate;

Greetings,
Sorry we cannot help with the plates at the moment, but FRH 2306 is what you need for the lettering/numbering/bufferbeam numbering. FRH 2350 is what you need for white/black/white lining.
Hope this helps.

Mark,

You could try to find out what Jackson Evans offer in their catalogue. There is a page on their products on the N Gauge Society web site.

Altenatively, and on a lighter note, you could always print my photograph above at a scale of 2mm to the foot , cut the plate out and stick it on the loco!

Anyway, have a good Christmas and a happy New Year.

I have found a website for the range, and it looks as if they only do the 4mm scale, but have contacted them to see if they can help.
http://www.modelmasterdecals.com/index.htm

Alternativly it was built in 1939 at Darlington, and named in 1939 at York, I could run it at this slight in between peiod untill I find a plate, then it can have been named, down the road/rails in York.

Anyway search continues!

And Happy Christmas to yourself

Jackson Evans supply all theirs through the N gauge society.

and as for St Peters School name plate, I have now located it, but not stopped to look at it, but the twice passing, it looks oblong, and not the curved one off the V2, but will look in to it, when I get a chance to stop.
It won't be this saturday, as I have to get to the museum, and to get my hair cut before the 3:30 kick off when we thrash (hopefully) England again!

Mark,

You have seen the oblong name plate of a diesel that was subsequently named St Peter's School. I know the School has one. I don't know which diesel, possibly an HST.
