Stokeley to Battersby

Post by thesectionalappendix »

Does anyone know this line well? The information I have from 1960 shows it as being 'One Engine in Steam' between Stokesley and Battersby, which implies it was single line. But the rest of the table for the line shows a double track between these points. Is this a mistake? Was the line double or single track in 1960?

By this point the line beyond Stokesley was closed I think.

A number of lines were of double track, but during the Beeching period what was originally a double track was reduced to single line operation. With the closed line being used for stock storage prior to scrapping.
This may have been the case here.

Bryan has it....

From "Railways around Whitby" by Martin Bairstow:

"The...section between Picton and Battersby was double track but from the early 1940s all traffic was worked on the eastbound line west of Ingleby, the other one being given over to wagon storage"

Many thanks to you and Bryan for that information.
