Buried Treasure

Post by Sniffer »

Not exactly buried, as hidden under nettles and used to prop up a wall in an old cow shed for 40+ years.

Anyone know where in the station this might have lived ?

It's big (about 12' x 2'6") and blooming heavy as the enamel sign is attached to a substantial iron frame.
Seems to have been hung on chains, as there are two mounting points on the top side of the frame.

Do you think any of the local heritage lines would be interested as part of their static displays ?

I set to and cleaned it up today, and given it a liberal coating of WD before and after.
Bit more TLC and it would be more than presentable, though it deserves a new frame.

What an amazing find! Off the top of my head I am sure there used to be a sign like this next to Harrogate South signalbox. The only "railway site" I can think of who may be interested is the Sidings restaurant at Beningbrough but I would suggest selling it at a railwayana auction such as Sheffield Railwayana Auctions, bearing in mind that large signs like this don't normally command high prices due to their unwieldiness.
Edit* It could be the sign in this shot http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/feat ... ndex.shtml

Sadly not, as the type does not fill the sign the way it does in the picture.
However a great site for pictures and links. Thanks for the notification and possible source for some historical walks I am working on.

t's certainly not the large sign on the retaining wall opposite Harrogate north box, but I think it could well be the one at the Starbeck end of the southbound platform in the 2nd image.

Looks about the right size and the two ground posts appear the correct distance apart to align with the top mounting points in my image.

Plus a little inside knowledge that I can't reveal also makes it likely.

No, the sign at the south end is clearly simply painted on the wall. Normal NER practice for a station with 2 through platforms was to have one nameboard on each platform at the end from which trains approached ( this is why many people call them "Running In Boards" because they were seen as the train "ran into" the station).
Here is a photomerge of the two photos with the B&W photo adjusted using the Adobe Photoshop Perspective tool.

You're dead right spotter.

Both Pinza and I are getting our North & South boxes mixed up.
Even more embarrassing for me since I was born less than a quarter mile from NORTH box.

Still reckon it could be the one from the north end of platform 4.

I agree. It certainly looks very similar to that one in the second photo, in front of the Mk1 coach end.

Whichever platform it is from, it is in excellent condition given that it has been uncared for since the late 1960s.

NYMR are apparently interested, but seemingly as a donation.

Surely the NYMR makes enough brass to at least offer a few bob.

Might stick it in the front garden yet.

Not in recent years, sadly!

I would certainly keep it Sniffer. Once you part with something like that, it will be difficult to get it back.

Fair point Bryan.

If we keep it we'll make sure it's safe.
A sort of garden diorama might be nice, with some kind of platform facsimile. :|

Whole bunch of signs from Harrogate for auction next January - I wonder if they turned up due the the refurbishment of the refreshment room as a pub ?
