British Transport Films on YouTube

Post by John B »

Sorry if any of you already know about these films but I thought it worthwhile to share these YouTube links with everyone else as I have not seen the films discussed on this forum.

The first is a charming little vignette of John Betjeman rambling along in an early DMU through some delightful ex GER/LNER branch lines in North Norfolk in the late fifties or early sixties. He travels from Kings Lynn to North Wootton, Sandringham, Snettisham and finally New Hunstanton.

The next two are of the "Elizabethan" the non stop 9.30am to Edinburgh. They are overdubbed with some strange poetic comment or doggerel but the scenes are of steam operations based around A4 "Silver Fox" 60017.

The first scene puzzles me though a little, I can't quite tell what engine it is that is situated facing the buffers, any suggestions?

Here is the second part:

I hope you enjoy them.

It looks like Waterloo to me, with a Schools class facing the buffers. It may be a case of "a railway station is a railway station" by the film makers.

Yes, I reckon it's definitely a SR Schools class 4-4-0.
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

I thought it was a schools class too but I didn't want to believe my eyes, also, the Kings Cross concourse was never that spacious either.

There are lots of other BTF films on YouTube, some of them are quite interesting.

Dont forget this one about a little bit of snow on the Stainmoor line.
Can anyone identify the other snowplough in the film?
The timber one is mine NER 18 / 90572 but I have not been able to identify the Steel bodied plough.

I like the way in the workshop, the last 2 digits of the cab side number are covered up, as 17 wasn't in when they filmed it!

at around 6m30s, does it say 60007 on the cab, but have the fox on the side?

The crew change you see on the Down(up) working usually took place around Tollerton.

No it does say 60017 very faint but you can just make the 1 out.

You're right, I've looked at the DVD version and it's 17.

I believe that the station was Victoria, you can see the curved sign proclaiming the Golden Arrow platform. See the following for a comparison.

The loco could be a Schools except I can't distinguish the curved nameplate on the splasher, so my bet is a King Arthur with a later style tender as it has a round topped boiler.

Definitely Victoria and the loco is a Schools.

1) It doesn’t seem long enough for an Arthur
2) Tender bends in at the top
3) Rocker casting is more prominent
4) Water injector pipes are straight

Plus the clincher is the cab: it has a window and is bent in at the top!

Thanks for the tip, Don. Delightful snippet, and I saw my old haunt, Stevenage Station, long since gone, about where the long descent through Hitchin down to Biggleswade begins. Cheers!
