Whitby & Pickering Railway

Post by Rlangham »

On the lookout for a good history of the Whitby & Pickering Railway, looks like a few have been published as well as books on the preserved NYMR - are there any members would especially recommend for the pre-preservation history of the line?
Author of 'The North Eastern Railway in the First World War' - now available in paperback!

Happy to help with anything relating to the railways in the First World War, just ask

These two are the best for history on my bookshelf:
Illustrated History of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway by Philip Benham (OPC) which does contain a fair bit of history and pre-preservation days.
Dalesman Whitby and Pickering Railway.

Also
Railway Memories 19 York to Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale. (Stephen Chapman - Bellcode Books) lot of operating info and photos.
NYMR past and Present 3 volumes - mostly photos.

A couple to consider.
From 1836 The scenery of the Whitby and Pickering Railway.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitby_an ... ng_Railway
plus a few more recent editions.

GWJ Potter - A History of the Whitby and Pickering from about 1910

Ken Hoole Regional History of the Railways of Great Britain Vol 4 The North East. - David and Charles.

Tomlinson

Hope these help.
