Agreed, very interesting. I had years ago pondered the Big 4 and thought having the Midland merged with the LNWR/L&YR was a mistake, and independently had decided that Midland/GCR/GSWR would have made a viable 5th group. Gorton vs Derby would probably have been as acrimonious as Derby vs Horwich/Crewe though!

I didn't know about the earlier proposals however.
