I can't give a definitive purpose, but it was in the area that ended up as the motorail loading ramp.

As it's located just off of Cheney Street at the entrance to the yard you'd wonder if it contaned the goods clerks overseeing the comings and goings. It's not shown on the 1894 plan but is there by the 1914 one, there is no description given.

On a 1920's KX suburban side diagram*, the barrel roofed structure is labelled 'Workshops'. The building with the low pitched roof adjacent to the East is labelled 'Offices', and since that building stands on the corner of Cheney St. and 'Approach Rd.' (which gives access to the triangular platform labelled 'Wharf') I'd guess that's where the goods clerks managed the inward and outward road traffic.

(*The diagram is reproduced on page 58 of 'LNER 150' in case someone else wants to have a look, and tell me I have it all wrong...)

This plan may also be useful

It can be seen on this clip from The Ladykillers at 0.42

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to reply and provide pictures, documents and text. Very useful.
Workshops of some form would certainly make sense, as would some office/clerk type activity associated with the east side bays etc.
