Not what you were looking for exactly, I know, but on the back of a 1937 LNER system map in my collection this advertisement appears:

"An excellent luncheon is served at the Dining-room at the following Stations daily between 12 noon and 2-30 pm

Darlington
Middlesbrough
Harrogate
Northallerton
Leeds
Selby
Scarborough

2/-

Menu
Soup
Joint and Vegetables
Sweets
Cheese and Biscuits"

For younger readers, "2/-" means 2 shillings, or 10p. A "joint" is a piece of roasted animal: not a herbal cigarette. And "sweets" will mean puddings (I imagine a tureen of custard): not a handful of Haribo.

And a British Railways 1954 "Passenger Services - Scotland" booklet advertises the delights of packed meals ("hygienically-packed, attractive carton meals...obtainable at all Refreshment Rooms - a real convenience"):

For 2s 6d you could tuck into "Luncheon Meat Sandwich, Packet of Potato Crisps, Tomato, Packet of Sweet Biscuits, Portion of Swiss Roll or Cake, Gala Fruit Pie". Or if you were really wanting the high life, 3s 6d would stretch your belt with "Ham Sandwich, Sausage Roll, Tomato, Buttered Roll and Cheese, Small Cake or Packet of Sweet Biscuits, Chocolate Biscuit, Chocolate Tea Cake, Fruit or Fruit Squash Carton".

If that weren't difficult enough to resist, the advert goes on to extoll the "innovation for Organised Parties of between 6 and 32...COMPAKT MEAL BOXES each containing a complete cold meal, hot beverage in vacuum flask, neatly packed and easily carried. COMPAKT MEAL BOXES which are returnable, may be obtained at prices from 7s 6d upwards, by advanced arrangements only from Principal Refreshment Rooms."

Yum! Still, I think I'll stick to Sushi, thanks.

(All italics, spelling and bold type are exactly as per the originals).
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?
