40A Lincoln open day in the late 50's.
When I lived in Lincoln from around 1957-1960 I remember my father taking me to an exhibition of sorts at Lincoln (40A) depot where 60022 Mallard was on display. I distinctly remember walking through its corridor tender but can find no mention of this show/exhibition/open day or whatever it was on the web. Does anyone out there know when this event took place and what it was all about?

Hi 68501, I live in Cleethorpes and can remember going to this exhibition myself, I have a photo of myself and younger brother stood in front of Mallard hidden away somewhere. I was under the impression that it took place in 1956 just after I had left school. What the exhibition was for though I dont know.

From memory, this event took place in 1958 to mark the opening of the new Holmes Yard Goods Depot. It wasn't anything to do with the MPD as such. Apart from Mallard, I think there was a mainline diesel (? D200) and also one of the last of the C12s, which had been withdrawn a few months before.

The exhibition referred to was held in January 1959 and I went with my parents as a 12th Birthday treat by train from Nottingham. We were held up at the crossing of the East Coast Line at Newark by 60511 Airborne on a down express which I copped as I did 70036 Boadicea which was on Lincoln shed as we walked past on the way to the exhibition. 67352 was the C class 4-4-2 tank referred to in the above post and 0-6-0 tank 68846 was also on display just before it was sold to a preservationalist.
I also had a walk through Mallard's corridor tender and it was a cop for me that day!

Hi Hussey, cant agree with you on the date for the exhibition. I lived in London in 1959 and when I went to it I was living in Cleethorpes, I would go with the 1958 date. 68846 was still working at Topshed in 1959, as loco pilot, I worked on it two or three times.

If it was the Holmes Yard opening, I have a copy of the pamphlet:
"Official Opening of Modernised Depot and Exhibition of British Railways Locomotives, Carriages, Wagons, Containers and Demonstration of Mechanical Appliances at Holmes Yard, Lincoln"
That was a mouthful! The date of the event was 16th & 17th January, 1959.

Ah this brings back memories. I remember Mallard and went through the corridor tender as well. I believe there was another A class, (A1 or A2 ?) of some description, I think there was a diesel rail car and a diesel shunter. They were all under cover in the new shed and it was a bit dim in there, especially on the footplates.
I would have been visiting my grandparents (with my parents, I would be just 8 years old) I expect for Christmas so I'm surprised we would still have been in Lincoln for the 16/17th January. We lived near Norwich so it would have been a fairly lengthy trip to Lincoln so unlikely we would have just popped back for this.

Excellent, that brings back a few more memories, I don't recall that many visitors or staff being on hand.
