Reedsmouth Shed Number

Post by Sassanid »

Can anyone recommend a good book explaining shed numbers please - and does any one know what Reedsmouth's was. I have been told it was C1 9/52 but that does not seem like any other shed code I have seen previously?

Thanks again in advance

The Handbook of Steam Motive Power Depots, Paul Smith (4 volumes) is a good source and any of the reprinted Ian Allan ABCs.

Reedsmouth was 52C, a sub shed of Blaydon.

At the grouping Berwick shed was responsible for Reedsmouth. When Berwick shed closed circa 1924 Tweedmouth assumed responsibility I will re post when i have checked dates and transfers. As the last contributor says Blaydon eventually took over.

From North Eastern Locomotive Sheds by K.Hoole The ex NBR shed was transferred to the North Eastern area of the LNER on 1 August 1924 becoming a sub shed of Tweedmouth. Later Heaton was the parent shed then eventually Blaydon took control.
At some time Reedsmouth locos carried the identification R'MTH on the front buffer beam.
Unfortunately apart from the first date i have no other dates of changes.
The locomotives present at Reedsmouth shed on 1 August 1924 were class D51 4-4-0T 1402, class J33 0-6-0 9024 and 2 class J36 0-6-0 9754 & 9779.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
