Maybe to stop cattle/people/tractors using it as an unauthorised road? From the plans you have posted it appears that there was a footbridge a few yards north of the bridge and if this was demolished before the Town branch closed this may have encouraged people to trespass on it.

I've just seen the line plan as posted by Bryan in this thead. They look to be field crossings, which I guess are closed to the railway unless a train is coming.

My men have been clearing the south end of Thirsk station , seen here burning vegetation, and to their surprise found the shed and turntable intact in the undergrowth!
2750, is there any chance of posting a pic of the part of your plan covering the pointwork leading from the south ends of the Up and Down yards to the station? Then I can get it all connected up. I plan to visit the Northallerton County Record Office this week to see what they have in the way of OS plans.

Haha. I wish it was all still there!

Will do you some screencaps for you in the next day or so. If you are going to the records office, could you enquire regarding OSmaps of Melmerby station area northwards from the late 1930s.... I have my reasoning! ;)

I have the plans for the Melmerby and Thirsk line.
And just noticed that the last sheet no 7 shows the Thirsk Town branch connection.
Will need to resize the image but will post later.

Many Thanks Bryan, what date is this from?

Would it also include Melmerby Station, I'd be interested to see that too.

Date on the posted image top right.
Amended 1926 I think based on a 1913 or 15 original.

Your request is granted.

Many thanks Bryan, that's really useful!
Do you have any further gems from around this area?

Depends on where you mean.
I have some more of the lines covered but such as the Masham branch is in Very poor condition.

Bryan and 2750 - thanks for the scans! Regarding Bryan's Thirsk Town Junction plan it's nice to see that on Google Earth the triangular shape of the garden round the cottages is still intact so I have been able to scale it off.
2750 - it is staggering to see the amount of trackwork at what is now a minor stopping point. You have to feel sorry for BR and the problems they had maintaining layouts like this!
Here are a couple of shots of work so far - just need to connect the shed area up to the main line.

The NSR was gated just after the water tower and was the last remanant of the branch used as a head shunt at Chathill must have been lifted early 1970s

Well I paid a visit to the NRM 3 days ago hoping to see their Thirsk plans but was told they "out for copying" - I wonder who to? :D The Railway Magazine article wasn't much use but the Modellers Backtrack for 1992 had a decent shot of Thirsk shed from 1920. The most useful book I found in there was in the shop and it was by Book Law publications, which included 2 superb shots at the south junction facing towards the shed and an indifferent one in the station itself.
I have been pressing on with the simulator and apart from the buildings it is nearly complete BUT 2750 I have to beg a favour from you: I am missing detail from the south outlet from the Up yard between the first set of points and the outlet signal as shown below - is there any chance you could post a scan of this bit so I can tie up what Columbo would call "a few loose ends"?
Signalbox - not good but better than the built in one!

The scans the NRM are doing aren't for me I may add, I currently do not having anything on order from them.

Thanks but thats the north outlet of the Down yard, I mean the south outlet of the Up yard, a little north of the signalbox? I assumed it was you having the Thirsk plans copied so there was must be a mystery person working on the station too?
General view looking north with missing track right
