Is the ECML in danger

Post by Pyewipe Junction »

I saw a news report recently which to suggested that a long term plan is to route the eastern main line through Leeds and then on to Newcastle.

Is there any truth in this and what would happen to the rest of the ECML below York?

That rumbling noise you can hear is George Hudson turning in his grave.
"M'ek all t'trains come to York" he said.

The old line from Leeds to Thirsk used to carry quite a lot of express trains and it was a useful route for freight. Heavy trains needed double heading and lots of interesting combinations would arise. For example, D49s and WDs.

I think that that is unlikely to happen. However did read (Modern Railways?) that a proposal to unelectrify it was considered recently. However I got the impression that is was quickly discarded

And return it to steam :D . But seriously what would the advantage of de-electrifying the ECML? That would render the 91s useless not to mention First CC trains and some of the Virgin rubbish, which probably wouldn't be a bad thing :P.
