Bert Langfield

Post by Langers »

My grandfather, Mr Langfield, was a wagon builder for LNER and ended up as the Foreman at the repair works in Peterborough in the 1940s and 1950s.
He died in 1959 and I am lucky enough to have some of his tools, passed down through my dad who now has alzheimers.
If anyone knew my grandfather or has any information, I would love to hear from you.
Thank you

Langers:

Do you know when and/or where he was born? I have found several living in Doncaster around 1911.

He was born in 1898. Not sure where - his birth certificate may be in our family papers but I live elsewhere. His dad was a Master Wagon Builder so could easily have been Doncaster. Sadly my dad can no longer help with this. Dad was born in East Markham in 1932 abd then moved to Donny, Leeds and finally Farcet from where he travelled to work at the Peterborough yard.
Thank you for your reply.

Hi Graham:

I have worked backwards from your father, who I assume was Donald. His parents were Frederick William Langfield and his wife Evelyn (nee Jackson). Frederick's father was a George Christopher Langfield (1869 Stainforth, Yorks).

In the 1911 George is a railway wagon repairer living at 8 Hodgkinson Street, Netherfield, Notts - the home of the Colwick Marshalling Yards and Shed. George & his wife, Sarah Ann (nee Arnold b1877 Nenningfield (?) Yorks) had ten children, nine of whom lived. They had married in 1895.

They were:
Millicent Annie - born 1897 Balby, Doncaster
Frederick William - born 1899 Balby, Doncaster
Nellie - born 1900 died 1901 Netherfield, Notts
Margaret - born 1902 ditto
George Albert - born 1905 ditto
Harry - born 1908 ditto
Frank - born 1910 - ditto
Reginald - born 1912 ditto
Sydney - born 1915 ditto
Eric A - born 1918 ditto

Frederick William married Evelyn Jackson in the second quarter of 1927 at Netherfield. I believe they had seven children:

Evelyn - born Q1 1928, died Q1 1928 Netherfield, Notts
Grace M - born Q1 1920 Netherfield, Notts
Frederick W - born Q4 1930 East Retford
Donald and Dorothy (twins??) both born Q2 1932 East Retford
Joan - born Q3 1935 Doncaster
Elizabeth J - born Q3 1937 ditto

I have found George C and his family (hopefully) in the 1911 census and also your grandfather's entry in the 1939 Register.

If this is your family (and I hope it is!!) let me know and I'll do some more digging for you. If you let me have your e-mail address I can let you have copy of the census and register entries.

That's excellent - thank you. I was wrong in remembering his name as Bert - when I spoke to my mother at the weekend she told me he was known as Bill - indeed, dad's eldest brother (yes, Donald is my dad) was also called Bill.
I greatly appreciate your efforts on my behalf - my email address is grahamlangfield@gmail.com
Many thanks again

I remember Frank very well. Although I never knew my grandfather, Frank, his brother, was in amazing health even when my son was christened in 1997.
I have been lucky enough to have inherited a number of Bill's hand tools. I use his Stanley Bailey smoothing plane as my main plane and have a hand brace and bit displayed in my hallway
