Creator of the Jazz Service

Post by blandford1969 »

Hi,

I am new to the group and am hoping that your combined knowledge may be able to help.

I have aquired via e bay a collection of around 200 negatives taken i have been told by the creator of the Jazz service and they came from his grandson.

The only problem my pc crashed with the details of who this gentleman who died by 1946 was.

Please could someone tell me the name of this gentleman.

Kind regards

Duncan

Hi Duncan,

Just after the First World War, the General Manager of the GE, Sir Henry Thornton (an American, if I remember rightly), commissioned a team to look into the possibility of improving the Liverpool Street suburban services using steam power because the cost of electrification was prohibitive. This team was headed by F.V. Russell, who may well be your man. He did a brilliant job and by making relatively inexpensive changes to track layouts and signalling achieved the most intensive steam operated service anywhere in the world and the most intensive service by any means in the UK.
I think that the Jazz service would warrant a write-up. If no one else offers, I may do so when I have the time.
Cheers, RichardB

You may be interested to see some of the F.V. Russell, negatives which are unidentified and I have just posted on Flickr, any suggestions would be very welcome. There are in total about 200 in this collection, so there are more to come.

Can you post a link to the Flickr page?

It can be rather laborious searching for the right set of photos on there without much information.

The GER Society is a very good organisation to contact obviously, and also has for sale various reprints of contemporary articles including this one:

http://www.gersociety.org.uk/index.php? ... &Itemid=84

and also other relevant material including articles by him:

http://www.gersociety.org.uk/index.php? ... hop.browse

and there will be mention of him, or his work, in the GER Magazine and possibly the LNER Magazine.

As you can see, F.V. Russell went on to much greater things.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies so far here is a link to the first page, several have now been identified and turned out not to be GER at all.

This one for example is suggested to be Sedgford http://www.flickr.com/photos/29644579@N07/
Here are some of those with no suggestions yet

There are many more. They appear to have been taken earlier than I thought from comments so far dating them between 1894 and 1918.

Even if you dont know where they are, hopefully you will enjoy them. There are still at least another 50 unidentified locations to come from Russell.

Kind regards

Duncan

Is the one labeled GSW/CR/NBR possibly Paisley in the distance? From the north east (Renfrew branch?)
