Engine Driver

Post by dimensions »

My grandfather, Harry Davies, worked on the railway all his life. When he died in 1941 he was a retired engine driver with LNER. Where do I learn more about him and his job?

Do you know where your grandfather lived or which engine shed (sheds ) he worked at? From this you can begin to build up - from books, magazines, railway societies etc- information on that depot, and the type of locomotives it had and the work they did at the time your grandfather was there. The 'big four' companies also had staff magazines (NRM York?) which sometimes gave information on promotions, transfers, retirements, pen portraits of staff etc. Good luck with your search.
