Signalman Loveland of Marshmoor 1971

Post by Mickey »

Does anyone remember this tragic accident back in 1971 when four signalmen i believe were all killed in a light aircraft accident on a return day trip from France one weekend?. The young Mr.Loveland at the time of this accident was a signalman at Marshmoor and i think he may have also been a telegraph lad at either Welwyn Garden City or Hatfield no.1 s/boxes at onetime?. I remember reading about the accident in the local newspaper THE WELWYN & HATFIELD TIMES back in 1971.

Indeed Micky. I think I'd never met Cliff but knew of him. Two others whom we sadly lost in that, if memory serves (I would be pleased to proved wrong) were I think, Rlfmen. Albert Henty and Dave Lindstrom. My recollection (which also could be inaccurate) was that Albert was also the pilot.

The recall, knowledge and memories of the members of this forum never cease to amaze me.
Nevertheless a tragic event by any standard.

I spoke to a controller at Liverpool street recently in the last six months who was from the Hatfield area and was also a signalman at Kings Cross back in the 1990s and he told me that there had been some discussion about this accident when he was at Kings Cross PSB. Apparently on there way back from France they hit a bank of fog so the pilot decided to fly lower and i think hit some power lines.

Yes, Albert Henty was the one with the pilot's licence and the terrible accident whereby three youngish signalmen lost their lives cast a gloom over that part of the GN. Dave Lindstrom I remember well, he was a very kind bloke to us youngsters and I think he was a Methodist lay preacher in Barnet?
A topper is proper if the train's a non-stopper!

I wonder if Albert had gravitated towards the London area, as I seem to remember him often being at Wood Green 1 before the fateful flight.

I attended the funeral service at New Barnet for the three signalmen that lost their lives in the plane crash. There was a huge crowd of railwaymen at the service. I had met both Albert Henty and Dave Lindstrom when I used to be an unofficial visitor to signalboxes on the Hertford Loop. Dave Linsdstrom in particular was very accommodating and taught me a great deal about signalling during my visits which were mainly at Grange Park. Dave used to have a nickname "The Vicar" because of his lay preacher role. I remember him talking to me with excitement about his flying trips with Albert and it was a shock to me when I learned about the aircraft crash.

I assume that there isn't a memorial plaque in Kings Cross PSB because talking to someone about this accident who was at Kings Cross during the 1990s he never referred to any such memorial plaque at Kings Cross PSB.

Never saw or heard of any such plaque in the PSB during my 1979-89 stint in the box, nor of one anywhere else.

Appreciate your feelings about those particular past signalmen of the GN line, and sympathise with the idea of commemorating them.

But realistically, with the passage of time, and latter-day staff movements, to my knowledge there are now no more than two signallers still in KX PSB (& none of its Ops. Managers originating from the area) who were in or around there just (just?) twenty-one years ago, and they both arrived from off-area during the preceding ten years, so regrettably, I expect that those fine chaps of forty-two years ago would mean nothing to anyone there today.

Sad but true you are probably right Stevie the time for such a memorial plaque has sadly passed if something like that was going to be erected it should have been done when the current Kings Cross PSB was partly commissioned in 1971 when the old box closed.

Time and memory often get lost , however i am sure the plane crash which Killed Dave Lindstrom , Cliff Loveland and Albert Henty, was in 1971/72. Reason i say this is because David Lindstrom had asked me if i wanted to go , i knew all three, particular Cliff as he was a telegraph lad around same time as me. I could not go on the trip for some reason , but also on the weekend before i ended in hospital with Appendicitis . I recall Brian Barr coming to see me and telling me about the crash and also brought me the newspaper cutting. That was in 1971.

I have changed the date of the aircraft crash from 1968 to 1971 after seeing your post Laurie for some reason I had always mistakenly thought that aircraft crash had happened in 1968?.

Hi Mickey ,
I recall that it was 1971 as i do remember Brian Barr coming to see me in Hospital and showed me the news paper cutting . Its very strange maybe what we would call fate or luck , but David lindstrom had asked me if i wanted to come along on that trip. I could not go for some reason , but then ended in hospital with appendicitis .
David Lindstrom was a real nice guy , very sociable always enjoyed meeting him .Cliff Loveland i knew as we were Telegraph Lads Together , Cliff used to cover KX power box and also Finsbury park boxes. I knew him from when he covered Potters Bar box.
Hey Ho Very sad memories of some really nice guys taken before there time .
