I've done it!

I found a chippy here in this foreign land wot serves bits! Yup! And I partook of them yesterday and, in the local vernacular, them bostin'!

For those interested, it is Major's Fish Restaurant and Take-Away in Bilston. Northern fine dining - fish and chips wi' bits and a tin of Vimto! Yum!

I am guessing it is what in North Yorkshire we would call 'scraps'?
Small bits of batter that fall off the fish when fried.

A fine drink the Vimto especially the cordial version, in Saudi I converted my gang of Filipinos to it, large water container a bag of ice and diluted cordial lovely.

Thanks for the explanation of bits.
An old student friend used to say that Guiness and Vimto was a great hangover cure, but I never get hangovers, even if really drunk, so I've never needed to try Vimto.

Has 'bits' definitely been explained Earlswood?
The nearest I'm seeing is Wavey's equating it to N. Yorks.'s 'Scraps' (thanks to Wavey and the others for their suggestions by the way), but it is prefixed by "I am guessing that...."

bits , scraps , whatever are the chipys way of short comming you - cos' they make the small portion up

so next time ask for your fish (rock to the sotherners) & chips then before you get them ask for Scraps

Rock salmon - is that fish? A true Yorkshireman prefers haddock (or Scarboro' woof if you live there) and even cod is down market! And when I get bits with my "mixed" they're just a free-of-charge extra.

It would appear to be anything the chippy wants it to be! I love haddock myself and here I am in an area that only does cod!

Haddock is definitely the fish for chips with Cod a close second, god knows how manna gets on with Baramundi and chips. Don't go near Rock it could be anything.
