"Proud of our chaps"!

Conversation overheard on the VHF Guard (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai.

Iranian Air Defence Site: 'Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself.
Aircraft: 'This is a British aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.'
Air Defence Site: 'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!'
Aircraft: 'This is a Royal Air Force GR4 Tornado fighter. Send 'em up, I'll wait!'
Air Defence Site: ( .... Total silence)

It's especially at this time of year that we all should remember those who are not at home with their families, but are looking after our security thousands of miles from home. Best wishes for a safe 2012 to all those with family members serving overseas. :)

Ay up!

Good to see RAF humour is the same as always.

I remember being told a tale of a BA pilot who got lost at Dusseldorf airport and was unable to find the correct taxiway. When the exasperated controller asked him if he'd ever been to Dusseldorf before he got the laconic reply:

"Oh, yes. Thing is we tended not to land in 1944....."

Hi BB

RAF humour??

Several years ago a series of books, entitled 'Laugh with the Navy, vol 1,2 etc' was published, filled to the brim with cartoons. They were, if memory serves, by Jack, who has a cartoon in Navy News each month.

They then did an RAF version, called, not surprisingly, 'Laugh with the RAF'. The entire book was blank pages.

I suspect someone was trying to 'wind up' the crabs!!

Nay I echo those best wishes for 2012!

Returning to the original post, the illustration was not a Tornado! Some American fighter no doubt.

The attached are Tornados -admittedly not RAF!

Ay up!

Looks like an F-16 to me. However, it did give verisimilitude to the original post...

That would be an F18A super hornet then. Not big on the American stuff, give me a Vulcan B2 any day!

Nah - just reading P G Wodehouse at the moment. Highly addictive and somewhat educational.

I've deleted the F18 photo - it was far too big, the wrong kind of aircraft and not really relevant to the thread in general - and LNER specifically.

At the current rate of growth, I will be completely over quota by Easter - that includes the margin I usually try to keep (we broke that margin during the end of last year). EVERYONE PLEASE use restraint when posting attachments and images. Keep them small, keep them relevant (at least the Tornado image above is much smaller - although it could be smaller still). From this point onwards I am going to be much more ruthless in handling large images. I shall delete them without warning (and hard luck if it appears arbitrary - I have other more important things to do). I may restrict attachment sizes even further and if the problem continues, I may ban attachments completely.

Just to add to the attachments thing - there's so many places you can put images nowadays (photobucket etc). All of my images are linked from my blog for precisely the reason it doesn't slow down any of the forums I'm on.

That is, without a doubt, one of the best reads I've had for a while. All hail to the SR71.

Sure is a brilliant read and I have no doubt that someone is thinking 'but the SR71 is a stealth aircraft, how could the ground controller know his location and speed if it's invisible to radar?'

Radio transponders chaps, that's how
