V2 no.60845 (withdrawn in 1964) at the head of a Down freight being turned off the Down fast line at Crescent Junction box onto the Down goods lines through Peterborough North station in 1952.

In 1973 for about 5 minutes I thought about going as a telegraph lad at the box but it would have been impossible for me to get to the box for a 6:00am early turn as no passenger trains at that time departed Kings Cross at around 4:00-4:30am and stopping at Peterborough station it would have probably meant catching the 1:00am Newcastle and even though I was keen on all things railways back then I wasn't that keen!!.

Yes you was right Stevie I just had a look at a track diagram for Crescent Junction box and the V2 hauled freight was being 'turned in' off the Down fast line onto the 'Down goods line' through the station to re-join the the main line again at the North end of the station and then hence to Spital Bridge Junction or carrying on along the GN main line a short way and turning off at Westwood Junction into New England yards or carrying on along the GN main line to Grantham or York maybe?.

From memory about the summer of 1973 was when the old Peterborough North station closed and the current station opened.

G'Day Gents

I married in late 1972, and working at Kings Cross, Peterborough, was also considered for my domicile, at that time a terraced house in Peterborough, was only 2,500 pounds, Yaxley was dearer at 3,200 pounds, but the timings of the trains made that idea a no go.

Back in 1974-75 Kings Cross loco had a job I can't remember the first part of the diagram but after arriving at Peterborough the loco always a Brush type 2 (class 31) would go passed East Field box and into a large parcels depot a bit further on and 'hook up' to a train of GUVs anyway there was maybe 45-60 minutes before departure from the parcels depot to head on back up to 'the cross' anyway one time I ventured out of the railway and found myself in a New England back street of old terraced houses one of which on the corner was a 'chippy' so I bought fish & chips and I must admit it was a real tasty meal I believe the fish & chips were cooked in 'lard' in the deep fat fryer.

I have a feeling the same chip shop sold 'deep fried 'Mars bars' as well?.
