Platform staff in hi-vis jackets

Post by Pyewipe Junction »

Sorry if this is a silly question, but what is the role of the staff on platforms at many stations who wear hi-vis jackets? Sometimes there are as many as three of them at a time along the platform at busy stations. I've noticed that some carry hand-held boards to indicate 'right away'. Are they security guards, safety officers or general-purpose staff? What do they do in between trains?
