Codes for Passenger Stock

Many keep asking about the codes used for stock, and we get little bits, well, I found Railway Magazine from April 1954 on Ebay, which has a little article on the Easingwold Railway.
In the magazine there is a full list of codes used.
Theses are the codes used in all reigions by British Railways based broadly on that used by the LNER.

Restarurant/Kitchen cars
First RF
Composite RC
Either Class RU
Third RT
Triplet RTS
Pantry Third RTP

Articulated Stock is indicated by the word 'Twin' 'Triple' 'Quad' or 'Quint' according to the number of vehicles in the set, the number being shown when necessary and the letters ART

I'm against acquiring too many 'sticky' threads. So down the road I'll include a coach code list when I add coaching rolling stock, and then de-sticky this thread :-)

'Tourist stock' should probably be followed with 'TSO'

I remember when I used to take note of such things in the 1960s these were some of the commonest stock on the ECML. For a long time I thought it stood for 'Table Second Open' which clearly described what these coaches were.

Mark should have probably underlined 'Tourist Stock (Bucket Seats)' as a separate category as a TTO is effectively a TSO.

Very useful indeed 8) but where do Pullmans fit into this?

Is a parlour car an SF? and is the brake second a BTO?

Hi Caledonian,

No Pullmans had thier own Codes. Generally they were;

Pullman First Kitchen PFK
Pullman Third Kitchen PTK
Pullman First Parlour PFP
Pullman Third Parlour PTP
Pullman First Brake PFB
Pullman Brake Third PBT

The first 'P' stands for Pullman
The second letter the 'F' or 'T' stood for First or Third
The last letter 'K', 'P' or 'B' stands for the coach type Kitchen, Parlour or Brake

I am not 100% sure on the Composites, Bar cars and Observation saloons, but I dare say someone will know :wink:.

According to Farish (The Ones I have) The P Comes at the end.
FP First Pulman/Parlour
SP Second
FKP First Kitchen
SKP Second Kitchen
BSP Bar Second

That is most useful.

I have been looking for the meaning of "attach 5 T" in the BR(E) timetable for York in 1953. It clearly means that a particular train was to be reinforced with 5 Third class carriages.

As gas tank wagons were of a similar status to horse boxes, was there a code for them, I wonder?
