Can anyone out there tell me whether non-corrider coaches (pre-war) were lined out in the same style as the express stock? Having found an excellent source of the correct lining (4mm) from Marc Models, I am not sure whether to line out all my stock.

I find that a booklet by Brian Haresnape called "Railway Liveries - London and North Eastern Railway" published by Ian Allan is most helpful in these matters.
Suburban stock was not lined after 1923. Also ends were painted black, not teak. Older stock was often painted a uniform colour somewhere near to burnt sienna in shade. Varnished teak carriages often had a a patchy appearance, with newer repaired panels being lighter in colour. To get a uniform teak colour, they had to strip all the old varnish off and add many layers of new varnish.

(I can remember seeing the A3 of the same name passing through Guide Bridge in the mid-50s).
Thanks very much for your prompt reply (Gresley sub stock etc). It was as I suspected, as I could never find any photographic evidence of these coaches being lined. I will endeavour to find Haresnape's book. Thanks for the tip.
