Last Train from Guisborough

Post by GeoffJ »

The last passenger train from Guisborough is well documented but for posterity (i'm not getting any younger) I would like to document the last train from Guisborough. This took place on the 21st of June 1965 at 5.15pm and was D6771.

Nice photo ! I wonder if Guisborough had survived to the modern era what the passenger figures would have been like, and the effect on the local economy ?

thanks for that Geoff, very interesting
I kick myself when I see such interesting historical stuff as I lived "down the road" in Ormesby at the time and all I wanted to do was cop Scottish Pacifics in Darlington works. I never went on the local lines to Guisborough nor Whitby - Scarborough because they were only branch lines with DMUs.
So thanks again for posting

I've often wondered what the last ever loco to appear at Guisborough was so many thanks for posting. Do you have any more photos taken on the Guisborough branch?

I've (hopefully) attached an advice note giving details of a Guisborough branch demolition train that ran on Monday 3rd May 1965.

The attached photo shows 90339 in very clean condition (ex works?) on the 1st April 1965, the photo is taken on the outskirts of Guisborough on the line to Brotton and Whitby. It is on line dismantling duties and the driver let us all blow the whistle, The residents of Guisborough must have wondered about the noise. It was a lunchtime as I remember we were late back to school !!.

Geoff,

Thanks again for posting the photo of WD 90339 at Guisborough. I remember seeing this train. At the time I lived in Belmangate and I took the opportunity to see it during my school dinner hour. I found out many years later from someone at work, who was the signalman at North Ormesby crossing box that day, that it that had worked from Dinsdale PW depot. The loco was noted in May 1965's Railway Observer on Darlington shed ex Works on Sunday 27th March 1965. This was the last steam loco I saw at Guisborough though I did hear a rumour that a K1 appeared on a demolition train.

If you have any more photos of locos in the Guisborough area then I'd be grateful if you would post them.

Geoff
There are a large number of railway photos on display in the Guisborough museum, a couple of which may have been obtained indirectly from me. The museum is only open on market days during the summer months.

Geoff - I've sent you a PM.

Ken Thanks for the PM, i'm unable to respond directly as I am new to the forum.

Any more photo's of Railways around Guisborough would be most welcome.

I did visit the museum quite a few years ago but as I now live in Cyprus I dont get to Guisborough very often.

New photos attached are all taken on the 11th June 1965.

1 and 2 are near the Station

3 The junction to Guisborough Station and Boosbeck/Brotton

4 is on the Boosbeck Branch near Belmongate.

I worked for the contractors dismantling the railway infrastructure for a few months in the summer of 65.

Regarding GeoffJ's photo of 90331: I can vouch for the fact he was late back for school! I was with him and we both cabbed that loco.

I'm fairly sure that the last train out of Guisborough actually carried either the up or down track loaded loaded on flat beds. It was either a type 3 or 4. Geoff describes as a Type 3 I think. Happy days tinged with great sadness at the stupid and inappropriate loss of rail connection to Guisborough now badly needed given the growth of the town and the needed transport links.

Found this on Facebook. Middlesbrough to Guisborough steam service in 1963. Possibly the last steam working to Guisbourough.

I believe the date mentioned (Easter 1963) in the video is incorrect. I think the actual date was Monday 6th August 1962 which was a bank holiday. There are a few reasons why I believe that the film was not recorded during Easter 1963:
1. Good Friday in 1963 was on the 12th April. There are far too many leaves on the trees seen in some of the scenes for it to be that early in the year, especially in 1963 following what was probably the worst winter in living memory.
2. I have a copy of the Special Traffic Notice (STN) for that week and there is no mention of any passenger trains to Guisborough being loco hauled. However the STN which includes Monday 6/8/62 states that the 1.30 pm, 4.30 pm and 6.10 pm Guisborough - Middlesbrough trains to be steamed hauled on that day.
3. The coach attached to the loco when travelling towards Guisborough is mark 1 composite (CK - E15053?). By Easter 1963 there probably would have been a yellow line above the first class section.

I suspect it was that last occasion that the general public could travel behind a steam hauled passenger train to Guisborough though 4MT 43129 turned up on 30/9/63 with the five day NER rail-tour.

Due to it being Facebook if you are not signed up you cannot open it.
I, like many others do not use FB.
Tried copying the wording but no luck.
Can you post a Youtube link or similar?
Thanks.
