Well, that's started a whole new can of worms. I don't have the Greenie which covers this class, but i read Yeadon as saying that all of them after the J39/1 initial build had 4200 gallon tenders. That assumption made, 3500 gallon versions didn't even occur.

I have a 3500 gallon in resin along with a body to make a J39/1 - maybe a renumber is in order here, or a trip up to Gateshead to see Dave Alexander next month. More reading certainly required.

Good morning JW.

I like the work on the old J39, I've always thought it could do with a bit of work, but as I don't own one thats another matter.

I did not know that article existed, I will have to look out for a copy.

Back to sleep now.

Good morning all

I like the Bachmann J39, and they are easily upgraded with a few mods. I stripped the split chassis of the three that I bought cheaply off an auction site, cleaned the bearings and now they run very smooth with good haulage capability.

I swapped the tenders of mine from the B1 tender supplied by Bachmann (J39s never ran with those) with Dave Alexander tenders to produce J39/3s. I also used a tender from a Nucast Q6 to make another J39/3.

I did produce a list of tenders given the the J39s as built, and will look it out when I return home. I will post it on here and someone may find it interesting.

PS; Some of the J39s had a single oval shaped cover to the valve chests, as opposed to the twin covers on the early examples.

Well, good heavens. Fine way to hit 2000 as well - that's a hell of a bit of research. I'll suggest it's added or linked to from the J39 page.

Good morning all

Thanks for the kind words.

The chart is not quite complete as there are a few locos that I'm uncertain about.

When it is complete I'll look into attaching it to the J39 page.

Hello Jonathan
I currently have time to spare as we're staying with our daughter in Queensland to assist after the birth of our second grand daughter. So I've gone back to page 1 of your thread and started reading it all from the beginning again.
This time I'm making notes so I know which page to go back to when I want to refer to some of the kits you've built that I still have to build.
Your thread together with Graeme's are wonderful resources for LNER/ER modellers - so many thanks for all the time you put in posting photos and text on what you have been building.
It was also great to meet you back in May when we visited the late Bert Collins' layout 'Hitchin'.
Regards
Andrew

Hallo Andrew,

Good to know that the time I spent reinstating photos hasn't been wasted, then. The RMWeb thread has an index after the first post was screwed up by some sort of forum fault. I wonder sometimes about putting one on here, but there's the search function and only so many hours in the day.

The trip to Hitchin was one of the highlights of my year, a really excellent day out. Hopefully next time you're over we can arrange a visit to Grantham as well.

In advance of the trip to the NEC, I made the most of a day at home (a rare occurrence recently) to weather the J39. It had been lettered and varnished over the last couple of weeks:

Image

For the moment we're serenely overlooking the matter of the incorrect tender; moves were already in hand to source a correct one and I have located one in stock which in due course, possibly even before the next Grantham outing, will replace this one. For the moment it will do the job.

So, a filthy wash and a good dose of powders later, this is what we have.

Image

Image

Some tidying up to do and maybe an oil stain on an axlebox, even a slight water leak round a washout plug, just to show what can be done. I've got a crew on the way from ModelU, a coal load for the tender is drying, fire irons are in stock and there will be a rake of wagons behind it. It's starting to come together.

Well, it has been a while hasn't it? Barely seems a few days since I last posted. I've been laid low by a heavy cold over Christmas which has kept me all out of motivation to do much. Things are picking up though and a few small projects meander towards completion while another makes a start. Most of the wagons were bought at Middlesbrough show in May and have awaited refinishing since.

Firstly, here's a blast from the past for some of you. I'm not old enough to remember these. I was given this and a similar recently, clearly in the knowledge that I'd feel compelled to finish them off. I wasn't even going to repaint this one but removing the brake wheels left too much mess. The bolsters really were that low according to the drawing in Tatlow; I've added some 10 thou strip to represent the steel plate on top. Not much more to do, really.

Image

Pair of 3H opens. One as a Cheshire Lines example just for a bit of variety.

Image

Lastly, apart from the Ks shock wagon, an Oxford Diecast PO. I couldn't find Adrian's list of everything wrong with these, so this one has had new buffers (LMS), capping strip clips removed and a London plank let in. Hopefully it's nearer passing muster.

Image

Now, to the next project. The Stirling Single is finally within sight - I saw the production sample at Warley - and although it's two years late for the birthday for which it was intended, it's time to start on the train to accompany it. This will be the 1938 exhibition train which ran to various parts of the country after the Flying Scotsman launch and (hopefully) will feature on Grantham when complete.

For anyone not familiar, Mike Trice led an excellent analysis of the makeup of the stock here. To quote from that thread, the train comprised:

"GNR Diag 303 (LNER 4220) Full Brake 29' x 7' 11.125" wide, 20' 0.5" w/b
GNR Diag 245 (LNER 4179) 5 Compartment Third 32' 1.5" x 8' 2" wide w/b 22' 5"
GNR Diag 155 (LNER 4078) Composite 34' 10.5" x 8' 2" wide w/b 24' 6"
GNR Diag 84 (LNER 4047) Toilet First 33' 8.25" x 8' 2" wide 24' w/b
GNR Diag 84 (LNER 4047) Toilet First 33' 8.25" x 8' 2" wide 24' w/b
GNR Diag 155 (LNER 4078) Composite 34' 10.5" x 8' 2" wide w/b 24' 6"
GNR Diag 303 (LNER 4220) Full Brake 29' x 7' 11.125" wide, 20' 0.5" w/b"

Of these, Bill offers the D 303 in brass (and shortly in resin) and Dan Pinnock the D 245. For the rest you're on your own.

So, let's go for the low hanging fruit first.

Image

I think Dan did these in one of the 2016 lists. I've had it a while, anyway. Nothing clever or innovative, just a pleasant way to spend Christmas Eve. The D.303s are on the way from Bill.

For the rest, I have been talking to friends on the Grantham team and so was in possession of these:

Image

These are Rowmark sides, laser cut (I think by York Modelmaking, but not entirely sure). The upper panels have a layer which pulls away to give the recessed panelling, the lower side has grooves to quide the attachment of beading, in this case Evergreen 20 thou rod. The upper side (D. 84) is unstarted, the lower (D. 155) has had panels removed and beading attached. Unfortunately I have run out of rod, so I'm making floors (Paxolin), ends and whatever else I can while some more arrives. The springs/axleboxes are by Mike Trice from his Shapeways shop.

Hi Jonathan
Happy New Year
I'm wondering if you reduced the width of the floor when building the D245? The slightly over-wide floor is is probably the only issue with Dan's D&S Howlden stock. Of course to do this you have to break off the backs to the solebars. I didn't on the first pair I built but I did after that. It just allows the sides to sit very slightly proud of the solebars as they should.

Nice work as usual Jonathan, but a couple of points.

The widths of all the carriages in the list you show are basically wrong for the width over body rather than over eaves of roof.

303 is Standard 7ft 6in plus ducket
245/155/84 are all 7 ft 9 in width over the waist.

A minor difference to be sure, but enough to be noticed.

Thanks chaps and a happy new year to everyone.

Maybe heresy, but I didn't do anything about width. From the normal viewing aspect it isn't apparent and the difference is so minimal that I don't think it's worth weakening the construction.

The dimensions aren't mine, I was quoting another poster. Paul, are you saying that those are the widths over the eaves, or that they're wrong altogether? It wasn't stated in the original post to what part of the body they referred.
