BLAYDON Shed

Post by STAFFORDA4 »

I have recently seen one or two photos showing Pacifics in BR days on Blaydon shed and wonder why?
What were they doing there?
I know a handful of withdrawn late 62/early 63 locos were stored at Blaydon that winter but the shots I'm referring to are a little earlier with "healthy-looking" engines in steam

Did they have any regular workings that supported their visits?

Thanks chaps

Gateshead Shed was being rebuilt at that time. Large locos were serviced at Blaydon during that period. Pacifcs and V3s were amongst those diverted from Gateshead

Yes Tweedmouth also recieved big locos at that period although some were cascaded down as the main was being dieselised and the Pacifics were used as station pilot/thunderbird duties.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

thank you Gents
I'm guessing this 52A rebuilding would be 1961-62 then

As an aside does any kind correspondent have a list of which Pacifics were stored at Blaydon in the winter of 62/3?
Thanks

Don't have all of them but those I photographed included J39, V2, A3s and A2s.

Numbers noted were 64942, 60934, 60078. 60539, 60511, 60072 and 64921.

I will add some photos

Later there were 4 J39s stored behind the shed just west of the Scotswood railway bridge. I didn't have many J39 photos so I struggled through the undergrowth to photograph them. They were 64942 (moved from its previous resting place), 64865, 64936 and 64860.
