I'm renaming a Gresley A 3.

Post by DonnyRailMan »

I plan to rename a Gresley A3 with a fictitous name and number in B R Green.
I thought about giving it the number 60144 or 60115 but then thought
would that number have already been given to a B R Locomotive.
Dose anyone know of them two numbers being used by B R ?.

You'll have a bit of a job fitting in any A3 alternative number. A4's ended at 60034, A3's started at 60035 and ended at 60112. Following that, the A1's started at 60113 all the way up to 60162, after which the more recently built 60163 was added.

Your chosen 60115 and 60144 were both A1's.

You're welcome, Donny. BTW, what name did you pick? Plenty of racehorse options available on that.

Just a thought, but if you were to do your A3 in pre-nationalisaion livery, you would have some choice of numberings. Rather than spelling it all out, as it can get quite convoluted, can I just refer you to this page: https://www.lner.info/locos/A/a1a3a10.php

Scroll to the bottom and check out the LNER numbers column.

You could use 60113 for a fictitious pacific, I'm sure that there was a bloke called Thompson that did the same :D

Hi giner, thank you again for your help . The name will be a personalised one I have chosen.
It is just a number I am looking to go with the A3 in B R Green I have thought about 600103.

Personally, I'd opt for 60101. One of the most anonymous of the class with a name (sadly) unlikely to mean anything to most people.

Hi Hatfield She'd, I thought that number was Great Northern number in B R days.

'Great Northern' - as already mentioned above - was BR 60113.

Whereas BR 60101 carried a name which is largely forgotten, and as a result many (perhaps most) would accept an alternative well chosen name without demur.

Yes, the name Cicero doesn't remind me of a racehorse. That's why I mentioned Chicago. Cicero is an area of Chicago. :)
